2020 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Ungeheuer Grand Cru

Bürklin-Wolf owns vineyards in the most famous “Lagen” of the Mittelhaardt. The company owns vineyards in various Lagen (vineyards) in the towns of Forst, Deidesheim, Ruppertsberg and Wachenheim. For the classification of dry Riesling wines, Bürklin-Wolf uses the Burgundian model of the quality pyramid. In this model, terroir, yield and degree of ripeness of the grapes are taken into account, so Grand Cru (GC) and Premier Cru are used. Bürklin-Wolf is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter) but nevertheless does not use the term Grosses Gewächs.

Situated at the foot of the Haardt Mountains, in the Forster Toplage. Our share amounts to 0.9 hectares and is located in the historically most valuable part of the Ungeheuer. The name goes back to the surname of a former town clerk of Deidesheim. The south-eastern slope ensures rapid heating of the volcanic basalt rock, while the dense layers of clay and sand ensure optimum water management and the absorption of minerals.

The Ungeheuer GC 2020 opens with a warm, intense and elegant, concentrated and even rich nose with iodine and dried porcini mushroom aromas. Pure, fresh and salty on the palate, this is a dense, savory and tense Riesling with an almost austere but tight finish with sufficient concentration and fine tannin structure for a long life.

ABOUT DR BÜRKLIN-WOLFF

For centuries, wine has been made at Dr. Bürklin Wolf. On around 85 hectares, mainly Riesling is grown, which is among the best in the entire area. This family business located in the Pfalz is run by Bettina, the 22nd generation. She has implemented her grandfather's vision and started making biodynamic wine in 2001, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The wines are therefore even more terroir-driven and exciting! In the vineyard and wine cellar, hardly anything is done with the wines, pure and distinct wines is the goal. The wines ferment and mature partly in stainless steel and partly in old wooden barrels.
