Description
The Sylvain Morey Bourgogne is a Pinot Noir supplemented with a little Gamay. Sylvain Morey has a plot on 'Les Grandes Corvées' where he has old vines of Gamay and Pinot Noir. When old Gamay vines die, they are replaced by Pinot Noir. Both grapes are picked and fermented together. In the glass, the Morey has a ruby red color with fragrant aromas of red fruit on the nose, accompanied by hints of undergrowth. In the mouth the wine is structured and balanced with a lively tension due to the fresh acidity. A good find at this level.
Sylvain Morey is the descendant of a family whose wine-growing history goes back 400 years, in Chassagne-Montrachet. The son of Jean-Marc Morey, a respected winemaker from the 1980s to 2014, and the brother of winemaker Caroline Morey who is the wife of Pierre Yves Colin. Unsurprisingly, Sylvain Morey also studied oenology in Beaune and Dijon. After work experience in France and California, Sylvain returned to Burgundy. Shortly afterwards, in 1996, the need to discover more and a meeting with Ludmila took him to the Luberon, a large oyster shell-shaped vineyard in the heart of Provence, north of Aix.
In 2014, Sylvain's father, Jean-Marc Morey, decided to split his eight-hectare estate. Sylvain and his sister Caroline (wife of Pierre-Yves Colin ) each received four hectares. Sylvain's plots are spread across the municipalities of Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay and Saint-Aubin. He also inherited the family home at the bottom of the village. That same year he produced his first Burgundy wines under the Domaine Sylvain Morey label. However, with his deep Burgundian roots and strong self-assurance from his two decades of winemaking in the Luberon, Sylvain has already made an impression in the wine world with his confident winemaking style. His wines, both red and white, show enormous elegance and power, excellent mineral texture, finesse and are worthy of age. Sylvain Morey is a name to watch.
