Description
Château Potensac is located on the grounds of the Haut-Médoc in the Médoc. Although there are numerous Médoc wines of a higher quality than the Haiut-Médocs, Potensac is a striking example of this. This wine is made by Michel Delon from Leoville las Cases in St. Julien. Due to the various extensions, the spireless church in the hamlet of Potensac is part of the domain.
The estate has been in the hands of the same family since time immemorial and has always been handed down by women. The current owner, Jean-Hubert Delon, inherited the estate from his paternal grandmother, Georgette Liquard. Although it is close to the river, Potensac is located on a high piece of land in Northern Medoc. Due to this position, the site has been populated since ancient times. The name "Medoc" in fact comes from "medio aquae" which means "in the middle of the waters". The vineyards are planted on the best quality soils in the Ordonnac district, the vineyards now extend over 60 hectares on a terroir where the typical characteristics of each grape variety express themselves very clearly and give the wine excellent maturing potential.
The 2020 Potensac is a blend of 44% merlot, 33% cabernet sauvignon, 22% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. The wine has 14% alcohol and is aged in 35% new French oak barriques. In the glass the Potensac is colored medium to deep garnet purple, it pops from the glass with scents of ripe, juicy black plums, blueberries, currants and cassis, plus hints of dried Provencal herbs, cinnamon stick and dusty soil. The palate is medium to full bodied and packed with vibrant layers of black and red berries, supported by soft tannins.

A powerful, rather rich vintage for this estate, the 2020 Potensac offers up aromas of cassis, vine smoke and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vibrant palate. Framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, it's built to age with grace.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
As I mentioned in my tasting note from barrel, the 2020 Potensac displays a little more opulence on the nose compared to other vintages. This is certainly true in bottle, though it retains a sense of composure, mainly red fruit laced with tobacco and a touch of leather. The palate is nicely balanced with fine tannins, crisp acidity, just a touch of licorice infusing the mixture of red and black fruit, a welcome tarriness imparting some classic Claret notes on the finish. A fine Potensac.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Potensac is a jewel of a wine. Bright acids give the 2020 notable energy that is immediately apparent. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, rose petal, star anise and crushed rocks are all beautifully laced together. This finely cut, chiseled Médoc is a winner. I imagine it will age gracefully for a number of years to come.

This wine is therefore made by Michel Delon of Leoville las Cases in St. Julien. Due to the various extensions, the pointed church in the hamlet of Potensac belongs to the domain. The Chappele de Potensac is the 2nd wine of this Chateau.
Owner Jean-Hubert Delon inherited Chateau Potensac from his grandmother Georgette Liquard and, in addition to Château Leoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien and Château Nénin in Pomerol, acquired a beautiful domain.
Château Potensac was the only AC Médoc to have the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel until this classification was abolished in 2007. The domain is located in the north of the Médoc on a high point on a limestone soil covered with siliceous clay, similar to that of Saint-Estephe. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc canes grow up to 80 years old in this special terroir and still produce perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. Château Potensac is a powerful, rich wine and is considered by many to be a classic example of a Médoc.
