Description
Bold, innovative and with a reputation for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined the Lynch-Bages style in the 1930s. The wine’s distinctive character has earned it a place among Pauillac’s best. It combines structure, finesse and elegance, offering generous aromas in its youth and developing deeper complexities with bottle age. The estate’s reputation as a top-quality winemaker began in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce outstanding wines, even during years considered difficult in the Bordeaux region. The wine’s deep colour and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Jean-Michel Cazes, Jean-Charles’ grandson, has worked hard over the years to develop and refine the wine’s supple and smooth structure. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s meticulous and excellent winemaking techniques have firmly established Lynch-Bages’ reputation for consistent quality.
The 2020 Lynch Bages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot which has matured for 18 months in French oak barrels of which 75% are new. It has a modest alcohol percentage of 13.41%. In the glass, the Lynch Bages is very deep purple-black in color. The wine needs some time so decanting in its younger years is certainly recommended, but then a legion of aromas are released with pure, ripe blackcurrants, black cherries and preserved plums which seamlessly merge into roses, cedar wood (cigar box), incense, cardamom and savory accents of black olives and smoked meat. The taste is full with a solid base of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and an excellent freshness that supports the generous layers of black fruit with a great finish. Not surprisingly, both Parker and Suckling give this one very high marks.
This is a 1.5 liter magmum

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
