Description
This Grand Cru, owned by Mr Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new 2012 classification. Rightly so, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns.
The 2020 Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion is a blend of Merlot 55%, Cabernet Franc 30% and Cabernet Sauvignon 15%. The Château Canon la Gaffelière is medium to deep garnet purple in color in the glass. The Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative scent of lilacs, cherries, raspberries, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and dark chocolate with a hint of iron ore and cumin seeds. The medium to full palate reveals a fantastic intensity of blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock-solid frame of firm, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, ending long with a fireworks display of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. An exciting wine from the start and one that must mature very well and should certainly be decanted in its younger years. This is an asset for the cellar.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Canon la Gaffelière offers up inviting aromas of dark berries, plums, burning embers, rose petals, incense and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's suave and perfumed, with melting, powdery tannins and a vibrant core of fruit. As ever, the elevated percentage of Cabernet Franc lends it a singular and compelling style.
Located at the foot of the Saint-Émilion's southern slope, Canon la Gaffelière's 20 hectares of vineyards are planted with some 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance being Merlot. Farming is certified organic, with thoughtful use of cover crops, agroforestry initiatives, unhedged canopies and late pruning. Macerations are long but gentle, and new oak is increasingly chosen for discretion over impact. The result is wines of textural sensuality and striking aromatic range, delivering all the fireworks that Cabernet Franc at full maturity can display.

From: 2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story... (Feb 2018)
The 2015 Canon La Gaffelière is deep, powerful and explosive. Seamless and captivating in the glass, it possesses magnificent richness, volume and intensity in every dimension. The Cabernet Franc, usually such a strong signature, is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the Merlot fruit. Espresso, mocha, licorice and plum infuse the racy finish. The 2015 is going to need the better part of a decade to be expressive. Tasted two times.

The 2015 Canon La Gaffelière is seriously impressive. Like all of Stephan von Neipperg's wines in this vintage, the Canon La Gaffelière is endowed with considerable richness and a sense of vertical structure. The significant presence of Cabernet Franc gives the wine striking aromatic lift, which it very much needs. Mocha, red cherry jam and sweet floral notes give the 2015 its soaring perfume. This exceptionally beautiful Saint-Émilion is going to need time to fully come together, but it is super-impressive, even in the early going. The 2015 has been nothing short of magnificent on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. The presence of Cabernet Franc is felt in the wine's strong aromatic signature.

This cru, owned by Mr. Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new classification of 2012. from Saint Emilion. The Classification of the Médoc (the left bank) from 1855 has (almost) never changed. In Saint-Émilion (right bank) things are different.
Here the classification is adjusted every few years and Châteaus can be promoted and relegated! In 2012, the last adjustment was made to the classification of Saint-Émilion. With this revaluation Château Canon La Gaffelière was promoted and this is of course completely justified, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns. The terroir is partly very qualitative (clay-lime), but the flatter part at the foot of the slope with clay-sand is very filtering and warm in terms of composition. Here he has planted cabernet franc which is doing remarkably well, contributing to the strength and aromatic complexity of the wine, alongside the opulent and mouth-filling merlot. The cabernets also contribute to the elegance and natural finesse of Ch. Canon La Gaffeliere. From the 2015 vintage, the wine is certified organic.
