Description
The 2020 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has developed beautifully. On the nose, aromas of wild blueberries, raspberries, violets, rose petals and forest floor emerge, framed by a refined creamy new oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with a vibrant core of fruit, bright acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The wine finishes with a long, precise and salty finish. It displays all the structural refinement and liveliness of flavour that the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion has to offer.
The 2019 vintage of Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is the last to be vinified, blended and bottled by Nicolas Thienpont and his team, before Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse took over the domaine in mid-2021, and blended and bottled the 2020 vintage. The wine is beautifully developed. This is a 1.5 liter magnum. Even more delicious and with a longer drinking window.
About Château Beauséjour
Château Beauséjour was founded in the 19th century and has a long tradition in wine growing. The estate was bought in 1847 by Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe, who later left it to his nephew, Mr Duffau-Lagarrosse. Hence the double name Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse).
The estate is located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a region renowned for its excellent wine-growing terroir. The estate overlooks the picturesque town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Château Beauséjour covers approximately 6.5 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, mainly Merlot (approximately 81%), followed by Cabernet Franc (16%) and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The vineyards are located on limestone and clay soils, which are ideal for producing powerful and complex wines. The unique terroir contributes to the minerality and depth of the wines.

The 2020 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is showing well in bottle, offering up aromas of dark berries, plums, licorice, rose petals and spices framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and chalky structure, it was vinified by Nicolas Thienpont and his team, but Joséphine Duffau modified the final blend, which includes 19% Cabernet Franc and the balance Merlot. Tasted next to the 2018 and 2019, the 2020 is somewhat more restrained, but it is the end of a stylistic chapter rather than the beginning of a new one.

Blackberries with lavender, cedar, sandalwood and flowers. Very subtle aromas. It’s medium- to full-bodied with a very tight palate of fine, structured tannins that run the length of the wine. Closed at the end. Shows excellent precision and aging potential. 81.5% merlot and 18.5% cabernet franc. Try after 2028.

The 2022 Beauséjour is fabulous. I find it better from bottle than it was in barrel. Explosive aromatics from the Franc make a strong first impression. Bright acids drive through a core of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, new leather and espresso. All the elements meld together seamlessly. What a vivid and gorgeous wine this is. I especially admire the long, saline finish. This is a superb effort from the team led by Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse.
