Description
Domaine Bernard Moreau: top of Chassagne-Montrachet
Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils, nestled in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, is one of the most respected producers in the Côte de Beaune. Under the leadership of Alex Moreau, they produce wines known for their tension, purity, and depth. The estate's style revolves around balance: natural fruit expression, subtle use of oak, and a perfect representation of terroir. Every detail, from the meticulous hand harvest to the long fermentation on the lees, is focused on finesse and transparency.
The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard
The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru sits above the legendary Montrachet vineyard on a steep, chalky slope between 265 and 290 meters. The poor, stony soil produces highly concentrated grapes with exceptional tension and elegance. Due to its elevated position, the vines benefit from cool nights, creating a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. These conditions make Chevalier-Montrachet one of Burgundy's most noble terroirs.
Vinification and maturation
The 2020 harvest began on August 20th, early but perfectly timed to preserve freshness. The grapes were lightly crushed and then slowly pressed for over three hours. After a brief settling, the juice went directly into barrels, primarily from the François Frères barrelry. Only two 350-liter barrels were used, one of which was new. Fermentation proceeded slowly and naturally on the lees, which imparts texture, complexity, and aromatic depth. In magnum format, the wine matures even more slowly, perfectly preserving freshness, tension, and complexity.
Tasting note
The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum presents itself with a bright golden yellow color. The nose is delicate yet intense, with aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, pear, fresh hazelnut, and a subtle hint of nutmeg. On the palate, it is full and seamless, with a creamy core of fruit, refined acidity, and a lingering mineral finish. The wine displays elegance and power in perfect balance, with a long, precise finish that combines freshness and depth.
Reviews of The Wine Advocate and Vinous
The Wine Advocate awarded this wine 94–96 points . William Kelley described it as “a magnificent Chevalier with aromas of pear, citrus zest, white flowers, fresh hazelnuts, and nutmeg, full and seamless with an elegant fruit core and lively acidity, concluding in a long, mineral finish.” Kelley praised the 2020 vintage of Domaine Bernard Moreau as “brilliant,” emphasizing that the wines are among the finest white wines from the Côte de Beaune thanks to their freshness, structure, and complexity.
Vinous also awarded 94-96 points to the 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru. Neal Martin described the wine as "gorgeous on the nose with notes of orange peel, crushed stone, and white flowers that gain intensity with air. The palate is perfectly balanced, fresh and tense, with impressive length and concentration." According to Martin, this wine "has the potential to age exceptionally well." The wine's drinking season is estimated between 2026 and 2050.
Magnum format: elegance with extra maturation
The magnum version of this Chevalier-Montrachet offers more than just a festive appearance. Its larger volume allows the wine to develop more slowly and evenly, resulting in longer life and added complexity. The aromas remain fresh and layered, while the structure becomes fuller and deeper. Ideal for those wishing to age the wine or serve it for a special occasion.
Maturation and storage potential
The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum has a long future ahead of it. It will begin to show its full potential in 2026, but the wine can easily age until 2050. During this period, it will evolve from an expressive, fruit-driven style to a complex palate with notes of brioche, honey, and toasted almond. A wine that combines refinement, power, and timeless class.

There are only two 350-liter barrels of the 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, a terrific wine that wafts from the glass with scents of crisp Anjou pear, citrus zest, white flowers, fresh hazelnuts and nutmeg. Full-bodied, ample and seamless, with an elegantly fleshy core of fruit and a tangy spine of acidity, it concludes with a long, mineral finish.
The 2020 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Domaine Bernard Moreau—but what's new? Alex Moreau readied his harvesters promptly, as it takes eight days to pick the whole domaine, and began on August 20th. Yields were good, and the cellar is full (which is not the case in 2021), with alcohols moderate, the highest being 13.4%. As usual, the fruit is crushed before pressing (which lasts up to three and a half hours), briefly settled and barreled down (François Frères is the predominant cooper here) for vinification with plenty of lees, Moreau doing nothing to discourage quite protracted fermentations, which he finds build texture and complexity into the wines. For my palate, the results are some of the finest white wines produced on the Côte de Beaune, and they occupy a prominent place in my personal cellar. The market is certainly taking notice, and prices are rising fast, but readers won't want to miss the 2020s.

The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises of two 350-litre barrels (one new). This has a beautiful bouquet with orange zest, crushed stone and light white flowers scents that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and fresh, perhaps just needing a little more mineral tension to evolve on the finish. Still, this has impressive length and concentration and it should age supremely well in bottle.

The domain was originally founded by Marcel Moreau, grandfather of the current owners.
Production by Bernard Moreau
The domain expanded to nine hectares, plus another five hectares of agriculture since 2005. The latest news is that the domain will be split between the brothers in 2021. Alex stays on site and Benoit develops his own winery. The village of Chassagne-Montrachet consists of several plots of land. a third comes from in and around Les Masures bordering Mergeots, the rest from the Puligny border. The vinification here is classic, all wines mature in oak barrels. Clarification and filtering are done as little as possible. Elegance and refinement are of paramount importance here. The wines of Moreau have undergone so much progression in quality in recent years that they are now considered among the top of the famous village of Chassagne-Montrachet. Bernard Moreau is the 4th generation to manage the family estate and has a total of 14 hectares of vineyards in 13 different areas within Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. Moreau does not have many secrets when it comes to that progression. For example, his friendship with Michel Colin-Deléger, one of the absolute stars there, and the arrival of his son Alexandre contributed greatly to the improvement in quality. Moreau's wines have received excellent reviews in La Revue du Vin de France and The Vine (Clive Coates).
