Alois Lageder Winery

Alois Lageder is one of the most progressive wineries in Alto Adige. The family business, based in the village of Magrè in South Tyrol, has been known for generations for its strong focus on terroir and sustainability. Under the leadership of Alois Clemens Lageder, the estate developed into a pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture in the region.

Lageder's vineyards are scattered across various altitudes in Alto Adige, often on steep slopes in the foothills of the Dolomites. The combination of alpine coolness, abundant sunshine, and large temperature differences between day and night results in wines with freshness, aromatic precision, and distinct minerality.

The Versalto line is one of the most refined expressions within the Alois Lageder range. These wines are made from grapes sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Dolomites and combine alpine freshness with structure and depth.

2023 Alois Lageder Versalto Pinot Bianco

The Versalto Pinot Bianco is an elegant interpretation of Pinot Bianco from Alto Adige. The grapes come from higher-altitude vineyards where the cooler climate ensures slow ripening and great aromatic finesse. The wine is made from organically grown grapes and clearly reflects the fresh, mountainous character of the Dolomites.

Pinot Bianco is one of the most characterful white grapes of South Tyrol. In the hands of Alois Lageder, this yields a wine that is both refined and gastronomic, with a perfect balance between fruit, tension, and minerality.

Terroir and grape

The vineyards are situated on calcareous and stony soils in the foothills of the Dolomites. These soils provide distinct minerality and a fresh structure. The combination of altitude, alpine climate, and abundant sunshine gives the grapes aromatic intensity while preserving natural acidity.

Vinification

After the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed to preserve the purity of the fruit. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures, after which the wine ages partially on its fine lees. This aging imparts extra texture and complexity without losing the wine's fresh character.

Color, smell and taste

Bright light yellow in color with green reflections. On the nose, notes of lime, pink grapefruit, and citrus zest, complemented by subtle chalky minerality and a slight reductive touch reminiscent of flint.

On the palate, elegant and crisp with a silky texture. The citrus fruit is supported by lively acidity and a mineral tension that gives the wine length and precision. The finish is fresh, clean, and long-lasting.

Reviews

95 points – James Suckling
“A reductive style with struck-match aromas, chalky and slightly buttery, showing limes and pink grapefruit. The complexity is supported by light body, a silky texture and long acidity that keeps tension and fruit in the finish.”

The Alois Lageder Italian winery in Alto Adige consists of 50 hectares of its own vineyards, managed on the basis of biodynamic principles. The holistic approach of winery Alois Lageder is reflected in the winemaking activities, the long-term relationships with numerous grape growers and their ambition to create awareness for an agriculture geared to nature. Alto Adige is located almost directly below the Brenner Pass, in the narrow valley that formed the Adige River in the Dolomites massif. Further south, the valley widens and the region becomes Trentino. Wine production in Alto Adige takes place on the slopes of the mountains, with vineyards sometimes reaching an altitude of 1000 meters. In Trentino, the vineyards are more in the plains and lower. Trentino and Alto Adige are 2 areas in the northeast of Italy, which are located below each other. They are often mentioned in the same breath as if it were one area, but the contrasts could hardly be greater. Alto Adige has only belonged to Italy since 1919 and is almost non-Italian, while Trentino is typically Italian in everything.

"We are not winemakers" says Alois Lageder, descendant of a family that has been passionately engaged in wine for 4 generations. "We see our role more as that of a midwife, coach and teacher. Our job is to guide the grapes in good health and with the utmost care and to encourage the successful development of our wines in every way." Over time, the Lageder family has managed to purchase several wine estates and vineyards in the best wine regions of Alto Adige. The company is currently headed by Alois Lageder, but the next generation is eager to take over the business. The vineyards work almost exclusively biodynamically. The labels on the bottles are in line with this. They form a beautiful symbolic bridge between the vineyard and the cellar on the one hand and the wine in the glass on the other. These exceptionally beautiful wines continue to amaze us and have been the foundation of our collection for many years. Many of the wines are 100% biodynamic and Demeter certified.

History

The roots of the Lageder winery go back to 1823 when the young craftsman Johann Lageder established himself as a wine merchant in Bolzano. His successors started producing their own wines and acquired a number of vineyards. Alois III, the great-grandson of the founder of the company, saw the variety of climatic zones in Alto Adige as one of the strengths of the region and bought the Löwengang wine estate in Magrè, in the southern part of Alto Adige, in 1934. Soon, smaller winegrowers started supplying him with grapes. When Alois III died unexpectedly in 1963, Alois IV was only 12 years old. Accordingly, his wife Christiane and his eldest daughter Wendelgard have led the estate on an interim basis. Since the mid-1970s, Alois IV - along with his sister and her husband and oenologist Luis von Dellemann - has redesigned the winery with a strict focus on quality and innovative methods in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the 50 hectares of vineyards owned by the family are grown biodynamically.
