Description
Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaux in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on the Belleyme map of 1785 under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan was taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard is made up of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and include a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravelly-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Considering the total surface area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem in which the soil, the vines and the climate blend harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The cellars of Vieux Château Certan optimally combine tradition with the technicality and precision of today. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to guarantee a soft, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a clearly more elegant result.
One of the wines of the year, the 2019 Vieux Château Certan unfolds in the glass with a striking bouquet of cassis and cherries, mingled with nuances of violets, humus, sweet spices and incense. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a fleshy heart of beautifully vibrant fruit, lively acidity and ripe, powdery tannins. Finishing with a long finish, this fragrant, sensual Vieux Château Certan is a remarkable achievement from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont. This is a unique 1.5-litre magnum. Even more delicious and with even longer cellaring potential.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2019 Vieux Château Certan unfurls in the glass with a striking bouquet of cassis and cherries mingled with notions of violets, loamy soil, sweet spices and incense. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's seamless and enveloping, with a fleshy core of beautifully vibrant fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, this perfumed, sensual Vieux Château Certan is a remarkable achievement from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont.
This 14-hectare estate, divided into some 23 distinct parcels, has produced one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux's 2019 vintage. Alexandre Thienpont (who took the reins in 1986) and his thoughtful son Guillaume (who is following in his father's footsteps) work simply but attentively: there's no smoke nor mirrors at this address, just a terrific terroir (composed of around one-third gravel soils, one third clay-gravel soils and one-third clay soils), planted with some 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and winemaking that brings out its best. After classical macerations, the new wines mature in some 65% new oak from Séguin Moreau and Sylvain for 18 months. The second wine, La Gravette de Certan, is entirely Merlot, mostly from vines planted in 2010 along with a small plot dating back to 1998.

Subtle and complex with blackberries, violets, lilacs, roses and hints of ink. So floral, yet subtle on the nose. Full-bodied with incredible polish and beauty, the silky tannins running the length of the wine and going on and on. It builds with sheer elegance and structure. A blend of 78% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 7% cabernet sauvignon. Drink after 2028, but already a joy to taste.

From: Memories Elide: Vieux Château Certan 1923-2020 (Jul 2024)
The 2019 Vieux Château Certan was picked from September 23 after light showers the previous day. "We dared to add some Cabernet Sauvignon in 2019, which gives complexity," Alexandre Thienpont remarks, "but the Cabernet was 'killed' in 2020." It has a much more discrete bouquet than the 2018, unfolding with truffle-tinged black fruit. There are fewer marmalade scents than I noticed a couple of years ago, but there is absolutely stunning delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, like a cousin of the superlative 2016 in many ways, but it may be silkier towards the finish. Elegant yet paradoxically intense, this is VCC at full flight. And it's only on its opening pages! Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium.

From: Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Vieux-Château-Certan has a fabulous bouquet with stunning delineation, a complex array of red and black fruit, sous-bois, truffle and Seville orange marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied and very precise, with fine-grain tannins, a superb bead of acidity and a peacock's tail on the finish lingering long in the mouth. I knew this was an awesome Pomerol...but maybe not this awesome! Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Vieux Château Certan is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. It is very clearly one of the highlights on the Right Bank. Soaring aromatics are immediately captivating. There is an exoticism in the 2019 that I saw from barrel that is evident in the bottled wine, but today, I see more balance and harmony. Crème de cassis, licorice, lavender, spice and rose petal blend into a core of red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced. The Grand Vin is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, but the blend also includes one lot of young vine Cabernet Sauvignon that was added for its aromatic presence. That decision paid off in spades, as the 2019 is truly magical.

Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
