Description
The origins of Pazo de Barrantes date back to the early 16th century and have been linked to the Cebrián-Sagarriga family ever since—yes, the same family as the Marqués de Murrieta. At Pazo de Barrantes, they have embraced a new challenge as a tribute to one of the world's most extraordinary grape varieties, Albariño.
It all begins with the unique terroir, with its own 12-hectare vineyard in the heart of the Salnes Valley. Blessed with a unique microclimate, it benefits daily from the family's hard work and care, expertise, passion, and skill. More than 10 years have gone into this new project, starting with the meticulous care of the vineyards to achieve optimal grape health and quality. Yields have been significantly reduced and a thorough selection of grapes has been made, both in the vineyards and upon arrival at the winery. Using a slow, gradual ripening process with very strict quality parameters, the best juice is selected for aging. In fact, in the winery, only the highest-quality raw material (the grapes) is handled with the utmost care, with minimal intervention. Above all, it is given all the time it needs.
By controlling the fermentation temperature in stainless steel tanks, they can slow fermentation and achieve greater purity and aromatic intensity. After two months of contact with the lees, the wine gains texture, while seven months of rest in the tank enhances balance and harmony. A new ingredient has also been added: wood for a small portion of the wine. Approximately 15% is aged in acacia barrels, which adds volume, complexity, and depth. Finally, the bottle aging process has been extended to over a year and a half, allowing the wine to become fully defined and balanced, expressing its incredible potential. The final touch to the project is the packaging, which best expresses the personality of the new Pazo Barrantes. A traditional Burgundian bottle has been chosen with a new label printed on heavy, waterproof cotton paper, imitating artisanal printing techniques. The label depicts the winery seen from the vineyard. After 30 years, the new Barrantes is being christened Gran Vino Pazo de Barrantes.

The 2021 Gran Vino Albariño is the third vintage of this new cuvée from their 12 hectares in eight different plots (Cacheiro, Huerta, Besada, Eira, Ferradiña, Ferradura, Tomadiña and Souto) in the Valle del Salnés plus a further hectare rented from the archbishop. The destemmed grapes were pressed and the must let to settle and then fermented in stainless steel for around 30 days. The wine was kept with the lees in stainless steel for six months and then a further six months without the lees. Fifteen percent of the volume matured in acacia wood barrels. It was kept in bottle for around 20 months before being sold. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.25 and seven grams of acidity (tartaric). It's pale and elegant, insinuating, perfumed, floral and subtle. It's lighter but very vibrant, and it's fresh and with volume and very tasty flavors. This could be the finest vintage to date—elegant, clean, classical and Atlantic. 105,274 numbered bottles and 1,827 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2022. The wine is released almost two years after the harvest.
At Pazo Barrantes, the 2021 harvest started on September 18 after a wet and cooler winter and rain during spring and summer. 2019 was warmer and drier, with a heat wave in late August and early September that made them start picking on September 13.

Unique, expressive and pure on the nose, with acacia, minerals and iodine. Bright and taut on the palate, with a subtle twist that goes through to the finish. Such an outstanding, gastronomic albarino. 10,000 bottles made. Drink now.

The 2021 Albariño Gran Vino emerges from Rías Baixas, with 15% undergoing fermentation in acacia barrels. This yellow wine with a greenish sheen exudes a tropical bouquet of melon, lime, green apple and herbs. Dry and rich, it presents a creamy flow and a saline palate that lingers with multiple layers—truly a delightful white.

Pazo de Barrantes is located in the Salnés Valley (Pontevedra), where there are perfect conditions for the growth of Albariño grapes. This impressive Pazo (Galician country house) has been owned by the family of the Count of Creixell since 1511 and rises from the vineyards Pazo de Barrantes is located in the heart of the Rías Baixas and has 30 hectares surrounding historic Pazo. Pazo Barrantes is without doubt one of the flagship wines of the Rías Baixas DO. The Albariño grape grows in the Pazo de Barrantes' vineyard with the famous sea injection. This vineyard provides a lot of aromatic complexity to the wine, thanks to the natural influences on the landscape. The Pazo de Barrantes is the perfect 'sister winery' of Marqués de Murrieta. They complement each other perfectly, Marques is among the top of the Rioja and Pazo de Barrantes the top among the Albarinos. Both the Barrantes Albariño and the scarce La Comtesse are among the absolute top of the Spanish Albariños
