Without a doubt, Lapostolle Clos Apalta is Chile's Icon Wine and the only South American wine to reach number 1 in Winespectator's famous list. Lapostolle has built an iconic winery for this wine in the mountain near Apalta. The Lapostolle Apalta Single Vineyard receives the same treatment as the Clos Apalta, but is made to be enjoyed earlier, mainly because it is harvested from younger plantings intended to be used with age in the Clos Apalta. Another important difference, by the way, but this Junior Clos Apalta only costs a fraction compared to its big brother
The Apalata Single Vineyard is a blend of equal parts Syrah, Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the finest vineyards of Lapostolle. Harvested by hand and selected per grape in the winery. The Lapostolle has had 12 months of aging in French oak, which gives the wine extra depth and complexity. This is a very elegant wine, completely balanced. Lots of dark fruit, with dark chocolate and nuances of coffee. Long, powerful aftertaste. The wine is already delicious to drink but can also rest in the cellar for 10 years.
Lapostolle was founded in 1994 by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and husband Cyril de Bournet after their discovery of a unique Clos in the Apalta Valley with 100 year old pre-phylloxera vines. They soon realized the potential for producing world-class wines. The Marnier-Lapostolle family has been known for its fine wines and liqueurs (Grand Marnier) since the beginning of the 19th century. In establishing her family's legacy in the New World, Alexandra brought generations of French winemaking tradition and expertise to the rugged landscapes of the Colchagua Valley.
Today, Charles de Bournet, the seventh generation, leads the winery in its latest chapter of innovation, punctuated by the official recognition of the Apalta DO in 2018. Together with Andrea León, technical director and winemaker, they continue to make wines that live up to the credo of the winery honor : French in essence, Chilean by birth.
The Lapostolle winery is located in Cunaco, Santa Cruz in the Colchagua Valley, but the heart of Lapostolle is just 7 km away in El Condor de Apalta, site of the famous Clos. Here, in a horseshoe-shaped valley with decomposing granite slopes, formed by the Coastal Cordillera, the old blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere were planted between 1910-1945. The vineyard's south-facing position protects the vines from the intense midday sun, allowing longer maturation and producing wines with elegance, balance, concentration and excellent natural acidity.
Today the vineyards cover 188 hectares planted in Cabernet, Carmenere, Merlot and Petit Verdot, along with Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault between the two Apalta vineyards. At Lapostolle, the goal is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world-class wines using the French viticultural philosophy and Chile's exquisite terroirs. The founders chose Apalta in the Colchagua Valley because the weather and geographical conditions are perfect for producing high quality red wines. Today, the winery is in transition from a biodynamic regime to a more comprehensive sustainability protocol defined under Wine of Chile's certification standards, expected to be completed by 2022.
