Description
Rich Burgundy with depth, elegance and classic Pinot Noir structure.
La Pousse d'Or and the Grand Cru terroir of Clos de la Roche
La Pousse d'Or is a leading estate with deep roots in the Côte de Nuits. Their focus is on minimal intervention, low yields, and maximum terroir expression. Clos de la Roche is one of their flagship Grand Crus and is handled with the utmost care. Extensive background information is available under the Winery tab.
The plots are located in Morey-Saint-Denis, on chalky soils with marl and bedrock. The thin topsoil and rocky substrate force the vines to root in deeper layers. This results in wines with mineral tension, minerality, and an elegant texture. The location and soil conditions produce wines with finesse, depth, and a clear terroir signature.
Pinot Noir, vinification and maturation of the 2019
The 2019 vintage is 100 percent Pinot Noir, sourced from carefully selected plots within Clos de la Roche. The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously screened. During vinification, gentle extraction and controlled temperatures are used to preserve fruitiness and purity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in oak, using a mix of new and used barrels, ensuring the wood provides support without dominating the wine.
This approach preserves elegance, creates balance, and provides a framework in which fruit, acidity, tannins, and minerality can harmoniously intertwine. The end result is a Pinot Noir with finesse, richness, and long-lasting potential.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of the 2019 Clos de la Roche
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, luminous ruby red color. The nose opens with aromas of dark cherries, blueberries, ripe fruit, and a juicy berry note. Below, floral notes of violets and roses, subtle herbs, forest floor, and a mineral base emerge—characteristic of the chalky terroir.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied. Ripe, fine tannins embrace the fruit, which remains concentrated and pure. The acidity adds tension and energy. The structure is firm and elegant, with a mineral core that gives the wine a long lingering finish. The mid-palate is rich without being heavy, the texture velvety smooth. The finish is long, complex, and persistent. Dark fruit, subtle spices, and mineral notes linger, creating a sense of balance and length.
Storage potential and drinking advice
This 2019 vintage combines fruit, structure, and minerality at a rare level. Thanks to its firmness, tannins, and balance, this Clos de la Roche promises to evolve elegantly over the next 10 to 20 years. It already offers pleasure and finesse, but with a little patience, it will become more complex, rounder, and richer.
