Founded in the 1990s, Hacienda Monasterio has become one of the benchmarks in Ribera del Duero. The estate operates entirely organically and boasts vineyards with a wide variety of soils and exposures. The style focuses on concentration and ripeness, but always with an eye for balance and aging potential. Day-to-day management is increasingly being taken over by the next generation, while maintaining the original vision.

The vineyards are located in Ribera del Duero at altitude, where large temperature variations between day and night contribute to aromatic intensity and freshness. The 2019 vintage was characterized by ripeness and concentration, with warm conditions resulting in powerful, well-structured wines. At the same time, sufficient freshness was retained thanks to careful vineyard management.

Hacienda Monasterio boasts approximately 98 hectares of vineyards spread across twelve different soil types. A very selective selection is made for the Reserva Especial, including one hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in bush vines. This old planting produces low yields and significantly limits the number of bottles. In 2019, only 3,900 bottles were produced.
Grape varieties and composition
The Reserva Especial differs from the regular Reserva in its higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, approximately 25 percent, supplemented with Tempranillo. Merlot is no longer used in this cuvée. The 2019 Reserva Especial is a wine that they don't produce every year (there will be no 2023). The difference with the Reserva is the origin of the Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents a higher percentage here (around 25%), and it spent two years in barrel and three years in bottle; so, it could be a Gran Reserva but they prefer to call it Reserva Especial. It was a concentrated year, very ripe in Ribera, and the ripeness shows in the profile of the fruit. The label states 15% alcohol, and the wine reveals abundant tannins, reflecting the conditions of the year. One of the big differences here is the use of one hectare of head-pruned Cabernet Sauvignon, which limits the volume they can produce of this wine. They usually produce between 4,500 to 5,000 bottles, but in 2019, it was only 3,900 bottles. It was bottled in March 2022.
I met again with Carlos del Río Jr. to taste the wines from Hacienda Monasterio, Montecastro and his personal family project. As I mentioned last time, he is slowly taking the reins of Hacienda Monasterio, both from his father and from his father-in-law (Peter Sisseck!), starting with the sales side.
They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. The idea here is to control the ripeness and alcohol in the wines as the grapes achieve ripeness earlier and earlier with climate change. Output averages 270,000 bottles per year.
2022 was a warm and concentrated vintage, and they also did a longer élevage. 2020 was fresher but also finished warm, and the ripeness was very good. 2019 was a very complete and powerful year.

This lengthy aging would formally befit a Gran Reserva, but the estate deliberately chose the designation Reserva Especial.

The vintage's ripeness is clearly present, without being overpowering. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with high concentration and distinct, ripe tannins. The 15 percent alcohol content adds volume, yet remains balanced by the structure and freshness. The finish is long, robust, and built for aging potential.

The 2019 Reserva Especial is a wine that they don't produce every year (there will be no 2023). The difference with the Reserva is the origin of the Cabernet Sauvignon, which represents a higher percentage here (around 25%), and it spent two years in barrel and three years in bottle; so, it could be a Gran Reserva but they prefer to call it Reserva Especial. It was a concentrated year, very ripe in Ribera, and the ripeness shows in the profile of the fruit. The label states 15% alcohol, and the wine reveals abundant tannins, reflecting the conditions of the year. One of the big differences here is the use of one hectare of head-pruned Cabernet Sauvignon, which limits the volume they can produce of this wine. They usually produce between 4,500 to 5,000 bottles, but in 2019, it was only 3,900 bottles. It was bottled in March 2022.
I met again with Carlos del Río Jr. to taste the wines from Hacienda Monasterio, Montecastro and his personal family project. As I mentioned last time, he is slowly taking the reins of Hacienda Monasterio, both from his father and from his father-in-law (Peter Sisseck!), starting with the sales side.
They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. The idea here is to control the ripeness and alcohol in the wines as the grapes achieve ripeness earlier and earlier with climate change. Output averages 270,000 bottles per year.
2022 was a warm and concentrated vintage, and they also did a longer élevage. 2020 was fresher but also finished warm, and the ripeness was very good. 2019 was a very complete and powerful year.

Hacienda Monasterio wijnhuis in Ribera del Duero
Het domein Hacienda Monasterio ligt tussen Pesquera en Valbuena de Duero, in het hart van de Ribera del Duero. Het werd in de jaren negentig nieuw leven ingeblazen en kreeg al snel een internationale reputatie. Historie van Hacienda Monasterio
De oorsprong van het landgoed gaat terug tot de 19e eeuw, toen er al wijnbouw plaatsvond. In 1990 begon de moderne fase van Hacienda Monasterio, met een duidelijke focus op kwaliteit. Vanaf het begin werd Peter Sisseck betrokken als technisch directeur en wijnmaker. Dankzij zijn nauwgezette manier van werken groeide het domein in korte tijd uit tot een vaste waarde in Ribera del Duero. Vandaag de dag staan de wijnen bekend om hun balans tussen rijp fruit, structuur en elegantie.
Wijngaarden en druivenrassen
Het domein beslaat zo’n 160 hectare, waarvan ongeveer 78 hectare met wijnstokken is beplant. De bodems bestaan vooral uit kalksteen, klei en leem, een mix die de wijnen spanning en frisheid geeft. De druif Tempranillo, lokaal Tinto Fino genoemd, voert de boventoon. Daarnaast zijn er kleinere aanplanten van Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Malbec, die extra diepte en complexiteit toevoegen aan de blends. Alle wijngaarden worden biologisch beheerd, zonder gebruik van kunstmest of chemische herbiciden.
Klimaat in Ribera del Duero
Het klimaat van Ribera del Duero is continentaal, met hete zomers en koude winters. Overdag kan de temperatuur in de zomer hoog oplopen, terwijl de nachten sterk afkoelen. Die dagelijkse schommeling vertraagt de rijping en zorgt voor druiven met veel aroma, concentratie en tegelijk frisse zuren. De wijngaarden van Hacienda Monasterio liggen op een hoogte van circa 800 meter, waardoor de wijnen nog meer spanning en balans krijgen.
