The Clar del Bosc is a wine from the stable of the Juan Gil family, so quality is assured and comes from the heart of the inhospitable Priorat made of 50% Garnacha, 35% Cariñena, 10% Syrah & 5% Cab.Sauvignon. After manual picking, the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and then is aged for another 6 months in the bottle.

The (old) vineyards are planted on slopes, planted on terraces with a terroir made of blue slate and quartz soils known as licorella, a soil unique to the area, between pine and olive trees. This soil structure promotes drainage and forces the vine roots to grow deep into the terrain to extract water. This gives the special minerality to beautiful priorat wines such as the Blue Gray and this Clar del Bosc. The vines have very low yields. The hand-picked grapes, collected in 16 kg baskets, were fermented separately in small stainless steel open vats of 15 & 30 hl with 1-2 daily pump-overs, and part in 500L French oak barrels with 2 daily punch-downs. . Each variety was matured separately in French oak barrels with capacities of 600, 300 and 225 liters for 12 months and finally blended by the winemaker

The wine has notes of liquorice and fennel, typical of this area, giving it a very Mediterranean profile, showing us perfect concentration, ripeness, balance and acidity. The polished finish is long and persistent with elegant tannins. A maximum of 7,000 bottles of this beautiful Priorat are produced. It is also worth noting that both the front and back labels are made of fabric instead of paper.

This is an ideal wine to enjoy on its own, but is also a perfect accompaniment to (silky/blue-veined) cheeses, pasta dishes, spicy sausage dishes, grilled steaks, roast chicken, roast duck, stewed beef and winter stews.

Vineyard for 2019 Gil Family Estates Clar del Bosc

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio

Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.

Organic/organic viticulture and sustainability are important elements in the vision of the Gil Family. Click here to see a nice video overview: Gil Family Estates - Video
