Description
The DO Almansa is located in the far east of La Mancha, nestled in a transitional zone between the Meseta and the Mediterranean Sea. It borders the DO Alicante (Valencia) and the DOs Jumilla and Yecla (Murcia). The Monastrell and Garnacha grapes demonstrate their enormous potential in Almansa wine. The vineyards in the Almansa wine region are primarily situated on flat lands with carbon-rich soil in the fertile topsoil, providing ideal conditions for producing high-quality Almansa wines. It is an extreme area in terms of temperature. The Almansa wine region is 100 kilometers (62 miles) away from Benidorm as the crow flies, but little of the Mediterranean climate of the Costa Blanca remains. In summer, temperatures soar above 40 degrees Celsius, while winters are freezing cold for months. Rainfall is scarce, forcing the grapes to work hard and develop very deep roots, giving the wines from this region their unique character.
Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil family. La Atalaya del Camino is the winery's top seller, a blend of 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell, planted at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, followed by a further 6 months in bottle.
La Atalaya del Camino has a dark ruby red color. The glass is lined with glycerin and reveals a super-fragrant nose of exotic spices, lavender, incense, and black raspberry. Juicy, layered, and almost meditative, La Atalaya has a silky finish that's completely unexpected from a wine with this relatively modest price. It offers an astonishing price-quality ratio and is one of the Juan Gil group 's three best-selling wines worldwide, while still relatively unknown in the Netherlands.

The very expressive 2021 La Atalaya del Camino has notes of wild berries and lots of aromatic herbs, showy and open. It's a blend of 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell, concentrated, ripe and heady, with 15% alcohol and flavors of black fruit in the finish. It matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. 54,000 bottles produced.
Atalaya is the project in Almansa from the Gil family from Jumilla. They arrived in the zone because their family used to make very good bulk wines from Garnacha Tintorera. Their wines are certified organic from 2022, but they are finding it hard to find organic grapes in the region. They are even going to release a biodynamic wine from 2023. Production is 450,000 bottles.

Inky ruby. Dark berries, licorice, espresso and a candied violet topnote on the deeply perfumed nose. Rich yet energetic in style, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that pick up a spicy quality on the back half. Shows sharp focus and spicy lift on the gently tannic finish, which lingers with strong tenacity.

In the coastal region of Levante you will find that the challenging limestone soil and limited rainfall, allow for Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrellto thrive. The ancient vines have adapted to these tough conditions and flourish at an altitude of 700 metres. The low yielding vines produce concentrated berries bursting with varietal characteristics, full of rich flavours, and enticing aromas.
Employing innovative methods, winemakers have harnessed the freshness of fruits, resulting in a blend that is full of complexity. While the Garnacha Tintorera grape is the most prominent variety in the blends, the sweet and robust essence of the Monastrell grape remains notably present, adding a unique dimension to the wines.
