The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is full and expansive on the palate, scented with pine needles, blueberries, and cherries. With superb texture and framed by abundant soft, dusty tannins, it has a long and concentrated finish, promising at least two decades of positive evolution. The Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak.

At Dunn Vineyards, they cultivate 42 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. Since 1979, they have striven to nurture these vines, ensuring they produce a wine that tastes like Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the leadership of Bill Smith, Randy and several other winemakers and grape growers proposed the distinctive Howell Mountain as an AVA (a separate appellation). The AVA boundary begins at 4,500 feet, so even when it's cool and foggy in the valley, it's sunny and breezy on the mountain. This wine embodies the essence of Howell Mountain Cabernet: deeply concentrated, bold, massive, ultra-rich, and elegant.

Despite weighing in at under 14% alcohol (13.84% to be precise), the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes across as full-bodied and expansive on the palate, redolent of pine needles, blueberries and cherries. Possessing terrific texture and framed by plenty of softly dusty tannins, it finishes long and concentrated, promising at least two decades of positive evolution.
Changes have been slowly seeping into the fabric of Dunn Vineyards over the past couple of years. Randy Dunn is still around—I saw him cruising around on an ATV as I pulled up the driveway—but the family has brought in management from outside the family in the person of General Manager Lily Mirabelle Freedman, who previously worked at Colgin. Assistant Winemaker Ted Kizor has been promoted to winemaker and Alex Dunn—Mike Dunn's son—has joined the business to manage the vineyards, with a focus on regenerative farming. He's the third generation to join the family business on Howell Mountain.
On the crush pad, there's a new destemmer, the Trailer Vineyard (now renamed Alta Tierra) is being replanted, and the family has introduced a carbon sequestration plan aimed at making the farming carbon neutral. The vines in the JK Vineyard (about four acres) were removed this year in preparation for replanting in the future.
The wines remain superb representations of their Howell Mountain origins, lowered in alcohol through judicious use of technology in some vintages, and a cave whose high humidity results in the loss of about 0.5% alcohol over the course of 31 months of aging in barrel, but all of the updates to the business need to be paid for somehow, so expect prices to rise over the next several vintages.

The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something What a wine!
