Description
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes across as full and expansive on the palate, smelling of pine needles, blueberries and cherries. With a great texture and framed by plenty of soft dusty tannins, it has a long and concentrated finish, promising at least two decades of positive evolution. The Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon matured for 32 months in 100% new French oak.
Antonio Galloni writes about the 2019 Dunn Cabernets (98/100): "The The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful"
Dunn Vineyards farms 42 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. Since 1979, they have worked to nurture these vines to produce a wine that tastes like Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the leadership of Bill Smith, Randy and a few other winemakers and grape growers proposed the distinctive Howell Mountain as an AVA (a separate appellation). The AVA boundary begins at 4,500 feet, so even when it's cool and foggy in the valley, it's sunny and breezy on the mountain. The wine embodies Howell Mountain Cabernet: deep concentration, bold, massive, ultra-rich and elegant.

Despite weighing in at under 14% alcohol (13.84% to be precise), the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes across as full-bodied and expansive on the palate, redolent of pine needles, blueberries and cherries. Possessing terrific texture and framed by plenty of softly dusty tannins, it finishes long and concentrated, promising at least two decades of positive evolution.
Changes have been slowly seeping into the fabric of Dunn Vineyards over the past couple of years. Randy Dunn is still around—I saw him cruising around on an ATV as I pulled up the driveway—but the family has brought in management from outside the family in the person of General Manager Lily Mirabelle Freedman, who previously worked at Colgin. Assistant Winemaker Ted Kizor has been promoted to winemaker and Alex Dunn—Mike Dunn's son—has joined the business to manage the vineyards, with a focus on regenerative farming. He's the third generation to join the family business on Howell Mountain.
On the crush pad, there's a new destemmer, the Trailer Vineyard (now renamed Alta Tierra) is being replanted, and the family has introduced a carbon sequestration plan aimed at making the farming carbon neutral. The vines in the JK Vineyard (about four acres) were removed this year in preparation for replanting in the future.
The wines remain superb representations of their Howell Mountain origins, lowered in alcohol through judicious use of technology in some vintages, and a cave whose high humidity results in the loss of about 0.5% alcohol over the course of 31 months of aging in barrel, but all of the updates to the business need to be paid for somehow, so expect prices to rise over the next several vintages.

Dunn
Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 2017
Fresh ripe cassis, blackberry and plum fruit flavors course through, carried by tar and apple wood notes that are well-embedded, giving this a muscular but sleek feel. Features a great tug of dark earth and licorice snap on the palate-staining finish. Best from 2023 through 2038. 2,700 cases made.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something What a wine!

Dunn Vineyards is a respected and iconic wine producer based in the Napa Valley, California. The winery is known for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon wines and its dedication to producing wines that express the character of the Napa Valley.
History of Dunn
Dunn Vineyards was founded in 1978 by Randy Dunn. He was driven by a vision to produce world-class Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the Napa Valley. Dunn Vineyards is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon wines. They produce both Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The Howell Mountain appellation, where a significant portion of Dunn grapes are grown, is known for its high elevation and unique terroir. The volcanic soil and cooler climate contribute to the production of intensely flavored, structured and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignons.
Traditional wine making
Randy Dunn is known for his traditional winemaking techniques. This involves using a longer maceration period and aging the wines in large, neutral oak barrels. The aim is to produce wines that showcase the inherent qualities of the fruit without an overt influence of oak. Dunn's Cabernet Sauvignons are known for their aging potential. They are structured wines with firm tannins and acidity, which allow them to evolve and improve with long-term cellaring. Dunn's wines are known to continue to develop and improve over decades.
Dunn Family
The winery remains a family business, with a strong commitment to maintaining tradition and quality standards. Dunn Vineyards has maintained a reputation for producing some of the most iconic and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the Napa Valley. Their wines are prized by collectors, connoisseurs and wine enthusiasts for their depth, complexity and ability to age gracefully.
