Dominus Estate Winery
Dominus Estate is located in Yountville, Napa Valley, and was founded by Christian Moueix, known for Château Pétrus in Pomerol. The estate operates entirely dry-farming on the historic Napanook Vineyard and emphasizes terroir expression, precision, and balance. Dominus's style is structured, linear, and refined, with a distinct European signature in its construction and maturation. Low yields and careful selection are key. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region and year 2021
2021 was a consistently warm year in Napa Valley, with no extreme heat spikes. There were only a few days above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which ensured even ripening. Yields were average, with high phenolic concentration. Skin maceration lasted approximately 20 to 21 days, resulting in structure and precision without over-extraction.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2021 Dominus is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, sourced from the stoniest parcels of the Napanook Vineyard, bordering the Mayacamas. These poor, stony soils produce low yields and high concentration, while Cabernet Franc provides aromatic lift and tension.
Vinification and maturation
Approximately 40% of the wine was aged in new French oak barriques. Vinification focused on structure and precision. The oak is integrated and supports the wine without being overpowering. The result is a powerful yet tightly structured Dominus with a clear focus on linear elegance.
Color, smell and taste
Deep dark red in color. Blackcurrant and cassis on the nose, complemented by rose petals, graphite, subtle earthy notes, and a hint of licorice.
The palate is full and powerful, yet remarkably taut and precise. The fruit moves between red and blue hues, supported by fresh acidity that energizes the core. The tannins are finely integrated and polished, with an almost cashmere-like texture. The finish is long, chalky, and mineral, with distinct depth and reserves for further development.
Drinking window and development
With scores of 98 to 99 points, the 2021 Dominus ranks among Napa Valley's absolute elite. The drinking window runs from 2031 to 2046, though the wine can easily age longer. A few years of bottle aging will further open up the structure and deepen the aromatic complexity.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2021 vintage is praised for its linear precision, depth, and balance. Blackcurrant, floral notes, and graphite are supported by fresh acidity and refined tannins. A powerful yet restrained Dominus with impressive length and excellent aging potential.

The 2021 Dominus is a 3,700-case blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, with 40% of the wine matured in new French oak. Black cherries and cassis lead the way, accented by scents of crushed stone and pencil shavings. It's full-bodied, rich and concentrated, dark and intense, with ample tannins, but those tannins are ripe and well-rounded without being overly soft or creamy, gliding easily into a long, mocha-tinged finish. As a whole, the wine exhibits wonderful balance, even if it will benefit from 5 or 10 years in the cellar.
Followers of the Napa Valley scene will no doubt already be aware that Dominus didn't release a 2022. The extreme heat that struck Napa around Labor Day and extended for a week or so took its toll on the dry-farmed vines in the Napanook Vineyard surrounding the winery. "There's nothing we won't do to make the wine as good as we can," said Director of Viticulture and Winemaking Tod Mostero. Ultimately, he didn't feel the wines were up to the estate's exacting standards.
In contrast, Mostero said, "Twenty-one is one of those vintages that's easy to talk about because we can characterize it pretty simply. It was a dry vintage. … Drought years are usually our best years—because we're dry farmed, the plants set less foliage. The summer was warm, not hot. … Post-veraison was moderate, without heat spikes. In August and September, we had a couple of low-100-degree days but nothing dramatic. Harvest extended from September 16 through October 1."
The three wines reviewed here roughly represent three different sectors of the vineyard, with Othello being drawn from the front portion of the property, with the highest proportion of silt and clay. Napanook derives from the blocks just behind the winery, while Dominus itself comes from the stoniest blocks furthest from Highway 29, pushed up against the Mayacamas.

The purity of the cabernet fruit is so enticing, with blackcurrant, rose petals, nettles and subtle graphite. Touches of terra cotta and licorice. Full-bodied with super integrated tannins that are wonderfully polished, giving a cashmere texture that is really luxurious to taste at this early stage. It is quenching and so delicious already. 95% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. Needs three to four years to come around but already a joy to taste. Try after 2027.

From: The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernets, Part One (Dec 2023)
The 2021 Dominus is a powerful, tightly-coiled wine that is holding back quite a bit of reserve. There's real depth and resonance waiting to emerge as the wine matures. Floral overtones and bright acids confer energy to a core of red/bluish fruits. Readers will find a Dominus built more on linear precision rather than opulence. It is hugely impressive in this tasting, with a long chalky finish.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2023
Dominus and Ulysses winemaker Tod Mostero is one of the most articulate and thoughtful winemakers in Napa Valley. “The 2021 growing season was consistently warm, but we had no real heat spikes to speak of in 2021, just a day or two where temperatures were above 100 degrees, nothing more than that,” Mostero explained. “Yields were average. Our time on the skins was 20-21 days, maybe a bit less than normal, but not a significant change.” The 2021s have the highest phenolic concentration since 2013.

Dominus Estate, owned by famed winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Napanook Historical Landmark and widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) of Napa Valley, California. The estate was bought in 1946 by the legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970.
In 1982, they entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix, which resulted in Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first marketed in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (87%). However, it also says some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but is still occasionally used in the Napanook wines. The winery, which was built in 1996, is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat during the day and the cold at night.
The vineyard's origins at the Napa Valley cult winery Dominus Estate date back to 1836, when it was known as the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the Inglenook winery, which in turn became the property of California wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to partner with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was director and winemaker responsible for top Bordeaux wine estates such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage 1983 of this new Californian
winery Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. The fact that Christian Moueix has pledged his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is apparent from his total dedication and commitment to achieve the ultimate result. Dominus is a wine with a clear Bordeaux aristocracy with the use of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
