Description
The former owner and namesake Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was known as the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the castle in Indian style, gave grand parties and lived beyond his means. In 1852 he was completely destitute and had to sell his domain. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the Chateau with the most new and advanced technique for making wine. From the harvest to the maturing of the bottles, everything is carefully monitored and carried out with the greatest care. For example, they have managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All actions are carried out by gravity. In 1855, the Chateau obtained the 2nd Grand Cru Classé status
The Les Pagodes de Cos 2019 is, like the G d'Estournel, a wine from the Cos d'Estournel stable and, unlike the Cos d'Estournel, is still very affordable. It is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, matured in 20% new barriques. Medium to deep garnet purple in color, notes of wild blueberries, red currants and currant jelly emerge from the glass, followed by a deep core of warm cassis, liquorice and bouquet garni with a hint of cinnamon. Medium to full bodied, it has aromas of black and red fruit on the palate, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness, ending with a persistent spicy note.
This is a 1.5 liter magnum in OWC/1 - Even more festive, tastier and with a longer drinking window.

2019 Bordeaux Primeurs Flash Review 1, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Les Pagodes de Cos (14.03% alcohol) is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aging in 20% new barriques. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, notions of wild blueberries, boysenberries and redcurrant jelly come bounding out of the glass, followed by a profound core of warm cassis, licorice and bouquet garni with a touch of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate bursts with bright, expressive black and red fruit flavors, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing on a lingering spicy note.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 Les Pagodes de Cos is a powerful, tightly wound wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Grilled herbs, menthol, licorice, dried herbs and rose petal lend aromatic brightness. In this tasting, the 2019 comes across as a bit compact and nervous, which may be attributable to its recent racking . Even so, there is plenty of character. It will be interesting to see what time brings.
