Description
Château Quintus is the fifth winery in the Domaine Clarence Dillon family. The name 'Quintus' pays tribute to the Gallo-Romans, the original winegrowers of Saint-Émilion, who were in the habit of naming their fifth child 'Quintus'. The Dragon de Quintus 2019 is the beautiful 2nd wine from Château Quintus and delivers a generous bouquet of rich, plummy fruit and creamy new oak. Medium to full bodied with a core of fruit framed by ripe tannins and juicy acidity and ending with a long aftertaste. As usual, this bottling usually comes from lower plots on deeper, sandy soils than those on which the grand vin is based and this also makes this wine more accessible and drinkable earlier than its big brother.

Wijnhuis
Château Quintus is a prestigious wine estate located in Saint-Émilion, one of the most famous wine regions in Bordeaux, France. The castle has a rich history dating back to Roman times, but it was revived in 2011 when it was acquired by Domaine Clarence Dillon, the owner of some of the most legendary wineries in Bordeaux, such as Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
Vineyards and Terroir
Château Quintus covers about 28 hectares of vineyards, located on the heights of the famous limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. This location offers an ideal terroir for the production of high-quality wines, thanks to its well-drained limestone soils that provide excellent drainage and water retention, and its altitude that contributes to thermal regulation, which is beneficial for the ripening of the grapes.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The vineyards are planted with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the two main grape varieties of Saint-Émilion. The viticultural practices at Château Quintus are focused on sustainability and respect for the environment. This includes manual harvesting and meticulous selection of grapes to ensure that only the best fruit is used for wine production.
The vinification at Château Quintus combines traditional techniques with modern innovations. The grapes are carefully fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete barrels, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, some of which are new. This process helps develop the complex flavors and aromas that characterize the wines of Château Quintus.
Wines
Château Quintus produces primarily red wine, which is known for its elegance, complexity, and aging potential. The estate's top wine is Château Quintus, which regularly receives high scores from wine critics. In addition, the estate produces a second wine, Le Dragon de Quintus, which is intended to provide an earlier drinking experience while still maintaining high quality.
Tasting notes
The wines of Château Quintus are praised for their rich and concentrated flavors of ripe red and black fruits, such as cherries, plums, and cassis, complemented by subtle notes of spice, tobacco, and mineral accents. The tannins are usually well integrated and the acidity provides a refreshing balance, giving the wines a long and elegant finish.
