Description
Château Latour from Pauillac stepped out of the Bordeaux trading system of offering the wine en primeur to the market a few years ago. They now release a vintage from their cellars each year that they themselves believe is perfect for enjoying now and for years to come. Château Latour is located in the heart of the Médoc, about 50 kilometres northwest of Bordeaux, where the history of Bordeaux wines began. The most prestigious terroir, l'Enclos, overlooks the Gironde estuary. This location has contributed to the geological complexity of the soil for centuries and provides a mild climate every day, ideal for viticulture. The estate has been in the hands of the Pinault family since 1993. Under their leadership, numerous improvements have been made to continue the constant quest for perfection in Latour wines.
Harvest year 2019
The year 2019 was characterised by harmony and balance. A cool, wet spring was followed by a warm, dry summer – perfect conditions for a generous harvest of exceptional quality. After a mild, wet autumn, January 2019 saw high rainfall (117 mm) and relatively cold temperatures. From the end of February, temperatures rose rapidly, leading to early but even budding: Merlot on 21 March and Cabernet Sauvignon on 28 March.
Early June was cool and rainy, but the weekend of 30 May to 2 June was exceptionally sunny and warm, which made flowering excellent. From mid-June, the warm and dry weather continued and the summer season lasted a long time. A short rainy period (27 mm in four days at the end of July) gave the vines the necessary relief and heralded the colour change of the grapes, which began on 6 August. Thanks to these favourable weather conditions, the berries ripened optimally and the grapes remained healthy until harvest.
The Les Forts de Latour 2019 Pauillac is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. The colour is intense violet. On the nose an explosion of black fruit: pure cassis, damson plums and crispy black cherries. Subtle notes of cedar, smoke and tobacco provide extra depth and complexity. On the palate the wine is both charming and supple, with a fine tannin structure and juicy freshness. The finish is remarkably harmonious and persistent.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour appears to have tightened up a little since I last tasted it a few years ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with hints of cedar, iris, orange zest and new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with a ripe core of fruit underpinned by chalky structuring tannins. While it's approachable after a decant, it certainly merits additional patience. As readers will remember, this bottling mostly derives from dedicated parcels located further inland from Latour's famous "Enclos," next to Château Haut-Batailley.
Château Latour left the en primeur system in 2012, so the estate's latest releases are the 2020 Pauillac, 2019 Forts de Latour and 2016 Grand Vin de Latour, which I tasted at the estate with Technical Director Hélène Génin. Certified organic since 2018, most of Latour's historic "Enclos" is being farmed biodynamically these days, and its entirety is now cultivated by horse to minimize soil compaction and preserve intact as many old vines as possible. But the objective, above all, rather than subscribing to any particular theoretical approach, is to treat the vineyard holistically, as a system, within and with nature rather than against it. Winemaking is traditional, with macerations in stainless steel followed by maturation in barrel with rackings every three months and one fining with egg whites. Great attention is paid to the choice of barrels: each lot is tasted and its style defined before it's barreled down in cooperage adapted to that style. But if these methods realize the potential of this great site, what makes Latour's site so great? After all, this isn't the only vineyard to occupy the quaternary gravel terrace that makes its appearance along the banks of the Gironde. When I posed this question, Génin's response was to point to Latour's lenses of blue clay interfingered with and underlying those gravels. It's these pockets of clay in just the right places, Génin contends, that contain the secret to the wine's elegantly muscular power and immense longevity.

Exquisite aromas of lavender, cigar ash and Spanish cedar with dried citrus follow through to a medium body and a solid palate with powerful, ultrafine and linear tannins. The muscle and long finish are so beautiful. Give it two or three years but already a solid wine. Drink after 2028.

From: Cellar Favorite: Château Latour 2025 New Releases (Jan 2025)
The 2019 Forts de Latour is a tannic, backward wine, as it has always been. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, graphite, sage and mocha open with a bit of coaxing. Even so, the 2019 is incredibly tight at this stage. Despite its imminent release, I would not dream of touching a bottle any time soon. Rain just before harvest in this warm vintage helped keep things in check and resulted in fairly generous yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare. At the same time, the mid-palate is a bit compact, while the tannins are imposing.

The Château Latour is one of the most famous wineries in the world. It is located in the Bordeaux in Pauillac. It is located on the border with the Saint-Julien wine region. Château Latour is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé according to the Bordeaux wine classification system of 1855. The estate covers 60 hectares and approximately 78% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and a little cabernet franc and petit are added.
History
Château Latour has played an important role in the history of the region. Throughout the centuries, many old documents about this winery have been preserved in the archives. This unique heritage shows extraordinary stability and continuity in the estate and those who have worked there throughout Latour's long history, which has undoubtedly been an important factor in the exceptional regularity and quality of the wines.
The oldest document with the mention Latour dates from 1331 and is an authorization given by Lord Pons to Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. Château Latour then appears in 1378 in Jean Froissart's "Chronicles". This was the time of the 100 Years' War. The "Tour de Saint Maubert" was a fortress to guard the estuary, manned by Breton soldiers for the King of France. After a three-day siege, the Anglo-Gascon army seized the fort and installed a garrison.
