Description
The Grand Vin of Calon Ségur reflects its terroir. It is rare, authentic and moves the soul. In the most natural way, it reveals both great delicacy and exceptional intensity. All the magic of Calon is in the balance. The wine matures for 20 months in new oak barrels, with the tannins of the oak harmoniously integrating with the tannins of the grapes over time. The style is brought by a Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses its finesse without arrogance. Elegance can be found everywhere, in the purity of the wine's flavors, in the delicacy of its texture, while its depth and length are also exquisite. The wine's extraordinary ability to age in bottle for many years is another hallmark of the estate. The 1947, 1953 and 1982 vintages, for example, still show astonishing signs of youth.
The soil consists of a thick layer of gravel, deposited during the Quaternary period. Mainly clay subsoil from the Tertiary. On top of the gravel deposits there is also a fine layer of clay of lacustrine origin. The area consists of 55 ha (136 acres), of which 45 ha is planted. The average age of the vines is 20 years. The grape varieties that are planted consist of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes are picked manually. A first selection of grapes on the vine. Mechanical sorting of the grapes by means of vibration, followed by manual sorting. Temperature-controlled tronconical stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for 20 months in 100% new barrels and finished with egg white.
The 2019 Calon-Ségur has aromas of sweet cherries and berries with some walnuts and dried flowers, as well as notes of crushed stone, pine, currants and violets. Full and gradually building on the palate, with intense, polished tannins layered throughout the wine, providing well-toned muscles. The finish takes minutes. Typical Calon. Needs time to soften. Try it after 2027.

The 2018 Calon-Ségur is blended of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (14.9% alcohol). It is anticipated to age for 20 months in barriques, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs just a little coaxing before it reveals seductive notes of baked cherries, warm cassis, licorice and smoked meats with nuances of hoisin, camphor, Chinese five spice and dried roses with a waft of cardamom. Full-bodied and completely packed with concentrated black fruit and spice layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a wicked backbone of freshness giving an energetic lift to the very long finish. There's lots of brightness coming from the Cabernet Franc component in here, but it is nonetheless a decadent expression.
“2018 was complicated to vinify because of the potentially high alcohols,” Laurent Dufau, Managing Director of Calon-Ségur and Capbern informed me. “Also, you had to be very gentle with extraction. You had to be soft, so as not to extract too much. The alcohol percentage of the Merlot was concerning—some came in at 16% potential alcohol! And the Cabernet Franc this year was amazing on this terroir.” Merlot was picked from September 19 to 25. The Cabernets came in September 26 to October 5. Petit Verdot came in on October 8th. Yields were pretty good here on average in 2018: 41 hectoliters per hectare. This year marks the final stages/completion of years of vineyard restructuring, new aging cellars and a gravity-fed vat room at Château Calon-Ségur. Most notably, they have been increasing vine density and slowly working on bringing more Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot on line, as was the blend traditionally. No doubt about it, quality at Calon-Ségur has been on an upward trajectory in recent years!

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Calon Ségur is a wine of soaring vertical intensity and pure power. That's the good news. The not so good news is that it won't be ready to drink any time soon. Exotic spice, pencil shavings, crème de cassis, mocha and licorice are some of the nuances that develop in the glass, but those descriptions can't even begin to capture the sheer beauty of what is in the glass. I loved the 2019 from barrel and I love it just as much from bottle.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Calon-Ségur, bottled in July 2021, has an alluring, very floral bouquet, the earlier crushed violet scents seemingly accentuated during the élevage. The palate is pure and poised, the fruit a little darker/blacker than I recall, and quite mineral-driven. There’s lovely acidity and precision here, and a touch of spice toward the harmonious finish. This is a superb wine from Vincent Millet and his team.

A total knock-out, the 2019 Calon Ségur is shaping up to be truly epic. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 soars out of the glass with stunning intensity. Graphite, pencil shavings, crème de cassis, new leather, spice and chocolate infuse the 2019 with stunning intensity. The 2019 is looking to be a wine for the ages.
