Description
The 2019 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has developed beautifully. On the nose, aromas of wild blueberries, raspberries, violets, rose petals and forest floor emerge, framed by a refined creamy new oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with a vibrant core of fruit, bright acidity and fine, powdery tannins. The wine finishes with a long, precise and salty finish. It displays all the structural refinement and liveliness of flavour that the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion has to offer.
The 2019 vintage of Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is the last to be vinified, blended and bottled by Nicolas Thienpont and his team, before Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse took over the estate in mid-2021, and blended and bottled the 2020 vintage. The wine is beautifully developed. Parker wants to nominate this vintage as the best produced during the Thienpont era.
This is a 1.5 liter magnum
About Château Beauséjour
Château Beauséjour was founded in the 19th century and has a long tradition in wine growing. The estate was bought in 1847 by Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe, who later left it to his nephew, Mr Duffau-Lagarrosse. Hence the double name Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse).
The estate is located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a region renowned for its excellent wine-growing terroir. The estate overlooks the picturesque town of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Château Beauséjour covers approximately 6.5 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, mainly Merlot (approximately 81%), followed by Cabernet Franc (16%) and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%). The vineyards are located on limestone and clay soils, which are ideal for producing powerful and complex wines. The unique terroir contributes to the minerality and depth of the wines.

The 2019 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has turned out beautifully in bottle. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries, raspberries, violets, rose petals and forest floor, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with a lively core of fruit, bright acids and fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, precise, saline finish. It displays all the structural refinement and vibrancy of flavor that this sector of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau is capable of.
The 2019 vintage of Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is the last to have been vinified, blended and bottled by Nicolas Thienpont and his team before Josephine Duffau-Lagarrosse took over the estate in mid-2021, blending and bottling the 2020 vintage. The wine has turned out beautifully, and I'd be inclined to nominate it as the finest vintage produced during the Thienpont era. I'll be reporting in greater depth on the recent evolution of this property in due course.

Blackberries and black chocolate with licorice and berry highlights. Flowers and crushed stones, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Plenty going on here. Very subtle and refined for this estate. Needs two or three years to come together. Try after 2024.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is shaping up to be magnificent. A wine of tremendous breadth and power, the 2019 has so much to offer. An infusion of scorched earth, gravel, spice, menthol and blackberry makes a strong first impression. Virile and potent, the 2019 offers remarkable persistence and yet retains quite a bit of finesse, especially given its size. The tannins are there, but they are matched by the intensity of the fruit. This is one of the most impressive wines of the year in the early going. Tasted two times.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is endowed with precocious black cherries, kirsch and blueberry on the nose. Just a hint of menthol emerges with several minutes' aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine precision, detailed and tensile with real quality stacked up towards the mineral-driven, lightly spiced and sophisticated finish. This year, it might just be pipped by Pavie Macquin, another Saint-Émilion managed by Nicolas Thienpont, nevertheless this has great potential and it should cellar for 30-40 years.
