Description
the identity of Tenuta Nuova
Tenuta Nuova is the cuvée that made Casanova di Neri famous worldwide. The vineyards are located in the southern part of Montalcino, on poor and stony soils of slate, limestone, and old clay. This location produces Sangiovese with depth, tension, power, and a striking aromatic layering. Tenuta Nuova is known for its combination of intensity and elegance, where ripe fruit, spice, and structure come together in perfect balance.
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 and is now among the absolute top of Montalcino. Giacomo Neri and his sons continue to run the estate with meticulous care. The grapes are harvested late, rigorously sorted, and aged for extended periods. Over the years, Tenuta Nuova has developed its own distinctive style that blends both modern and classic.
the advantage of a Methuselah (6 liter)
The Methusalem is not only impressive in size but also offers a slower and more even aging process. The volume-to-oxygen ratio is favorable, allowing the wine to remain fresh and energetic for longer. The tannins soften more slowly, and the aromatic complexity gradually deepens. For a powerful Brunello like this, a Methusalem is the ideal size to fully develop.
the 2019 wine year: intense, pure and perfectly balanced
The 2019 vintage is considered one of the most harmonious and successful of the past decade in Montalcino. The summer was warm but never excessively so, with plenty of cool nights. This allowed the grapes to develop a deep aromatic core, perfect phenolic ripeness, and retain fresh acidity.
For Tenuta Nuova, this resulted in a wine with power, maturity, and tension. The tannins are fine, concentrated, and structured. The aromatic freshness makes the wine particularly elegant, even in its youth.
vinification and maturation
The hand-picked grapes are rigorously selected. Fermentation is gentle and controlled. The wine then matures in tonneaux for thirty months, from which it develops its characteristic texture and warmth. Further bottle aging follows, which, in a Methusalem, is even more subtle and slower, allowing the aromas and structure to develop harmoniously.
color, aroma and taste of the 2019 Tenuta Nuova
The color is deep ruby red with an almost dark core. The nose reveals a full expression of black cherry, ripe plums, wild berries, and a subtle smoky spice. This is followed by notes of licorice, star anise, black pepper, and a hint of balsamic vinegar.
The Wine Advocate's assessment is subtly reflected here in the deep impressions of black fruit, dark spices, and pronounced concentration. References to ink, dark spices, and a powerful structure are clearly discernible in the aromatic layering.
Furthermore, the signature elements of the Vinous rating are incorporated: the wine displays a refined perfume of dried black cherry, clove, sage, and a subtle citrusy tension reminiscent of spiced blood orange. The floral character with notes of violet and lavender emerges early on, giving the wine an elegant, airy lift.
On the palate, the wine is full and intense, with a core of ripe black fruit supported by vibrant acidity. The texture is silky yet firm, remarkably precise and classic in style. The mid-palate is expansive, layered, and deep, combining spice, floral notes, and a light mineral undertone.
The tannins are fine-grained and powerful, but never harsh. As Vinous notes, the wine clearly reveals its structure, with a long, impressive finish that combines power and subtlety. The finish is long, complex, and structured, again with notes of black cherries, spices, and a refined dry tension.
In a Methuselah, this 2019 will develop extremely slowly and harmoniously, allowing its elegance and aromatic purity to emerge even more strongly.

In my mind, this is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style. With 30 months of aging in tonneaux, it shows enormous richness and texture, and the stellar fruit quality appears with more primary elegance compared to the more expensive Cerretalto that is released with an extra year of aging. That dynamic is especially pronounced in a comparison of the 2019 and 2018 vintages. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a dark vein of toasted spice, black fruit, ink, blackberry compote, licorice and star anise. Dark as night, it is exceptionally well crafted with a robust delivery of concentrated fruit and solid tannic structure. You can count on excellent cellar potential, or at a minimum, serve it with a classic steak. Production is exactly 69,696 bottles.
I am extremely encouraged by this year's tasting from Casanova di Neri. To my mind, we have witnessed the great "sorpasso" (or overtaking in English) in which a new wine (the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri) outperformed tried and true favorites like Cerretalto and Tenuta Nuova. This shows the deft talent and winemaking flexibility of Giacomo Neri, his sons and the entire winery team. Congratulations.

Black cherries with violets and other flowers on the nose. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Needs time to soften. Give it three to five years of bottle age. Better after 2025.

From: A Tale of Two Extremes: The 2020 Brunellos and 2019 Riservas (Nov 2024)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is an understated beauty, perfumed and highly aromatic, with a gorgeous blend of dried black cherry, clove, hints of sage and spiced blood orange. It is cool-toned and classic in feel, with silken textures and vibrant acidity that enlivens the core of tart red berry fruits. A cascade of violet and lavender tones resonate over a coating of fine-grained tannins as it flexes its structural muscle, tapering off long and potent and demanding the taster's attention. This will pay dividends in the cellar.

Revisiting Casanova di Neri this July was a fantastic opportunity to taste through the range of 2019s and 2020s (the 2019s were not included in last year's report). In my view, the Neri family represents one of the most significant evolutions in Montalcino. The wines have always possessed remarkable balance that allows them to age gracefully, yet they were once large-scaled, brooding and powerful. Today, there’s a new level of purity throughout the range but the same proportion of ripe fruit and character that is undeniably Casanova di Neri. Starting in 2017, the family began shortening maceration times and invested in an optical sorter. The differences in the wines are notable. The 2020s at this address are drop-dead gorgeous and may have been even more impressive if I hadn’t tasted them next to the 2019s. Both vintages of the Tenuta Nuova surpassed expectations. The late-release Cerretalto remains the powerhouse of this range yet comes across as harmonious from start to finish, even the 2018. But it’s the new Giovanni Neri Brunello that really turns my head (both the 2019 and 2020). Hailing from a 50-year-old vineyard near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this gorgeous wine has quickly risen to the top of the portfolio. The family spent years rehabilitating these old vines, and now we all reap the rewards. Of note, there will be no 2020 Cerretalto, with the fruit from that bottling going into the white label Brunello.

Casanova di Neri belongs to a new generation of Brunello producers. The company started in 1971, when Giovanni Neri bought the largest estate in the Montalcino area. The domain is a total of 39 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards. The oldest vineyard is 50 years old. The vineyards are located at an altitude of about 350 meters above sea level. Casanova di Neri is one of the best producers of Brunello wines. The Tenuta Nuova belongs to their very best Brunello where everything is done to pursue the ultimate perfection.
