Description
the story behind Tenuta Nuova
Tenuta Nuova is the flagship wine in the Casanova di Neri range. It's the cuvée in which the Neri family clearly demonstrates their style: ripe fruit, concentration, depth, and a perfect balance between power and finesse. The vineyards for Tenuta Nuova are located in the southern part of Montalcino, where the soil consists of slate, limestone, and ancient clay structures that produce ripe tannins and a striking aromatic intensity.
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 and is now one of Montalcino's most esteemed producers. Giacomo Neri and his sons continue this legacy with meticulous attention to detail, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The grapes are harvested late, often at perfect phenolic ripeness, and the wines are aged extensively in large wooden barrels and tonneaux before bottling.
the meaning of the Balthazar format
The 12-liter Balthazar is a rare and exclusive edition. Its large capacity allows the wine to mature more slowly and retain its freshness and structure longer. This allows the expression of ripe fruit, tension, and complexity to emerge even more subtly. Moreover, a large bottle is not only impressive to present but also offers a longer drinking window and often a more elegant development.
the 2019 wine year in Montalcino
The 2019 vintage is considered one of the most harmonious of the recent decade. The summer was warm, but not excessively so, with sufficiently cool nights that ensured excellent aromatic freshness. The harvest was even, yielding perfectly ripe Sangiovese with deep color, ripe tannins, and excellent acidity.
For Tenuta Nuova, 2019 was a standout year. The combination of long barrel aging and the natural concentration of the year resulted in a wine with layers, tension, and impressive aromatic depth.
vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, after which the wine is aged in tonneaux for a full thirty months. This maturation gives the wine its characteristic texture and softness, without the oak overpowering its freshness.
After aging in wood, the wine rests in the bottle for a long time. In a Balthazar, the wine develops more slowly, giving both the aroma and flavor additional depth and finesse.
color, aroma and taste of the 2019 Tenuta Nuova
The color is deep ruby red with dark hues. The aroma opens powerfully with notes of black cherries, plums, and berries. Subtle spices like star anise, licorice, and black pepper emerge, along with dark floral nuances. The nose is full and intense, yet retains a striking precision.
The elements from The Wine Advocate's review are subtly incorporated here: dark notes of roasted spices, black fruits, a hint of ink, and a hint of ripe blackberry give the wine its deep character. Notes of dried herbs and balsamic vinegar also clearly emerge as part of the complexity.
On the palate, the wine has a powerful structure with ripe, present, yet refined tannins. The attack is generous and rich, filled with ripe fruit, followed by an energetic mid-palate with tension and depth. The wine displays concentration without becoming heavy. The long oak aging translates into a silky texture that contrasts beautifully with the firm core of Sangiovese.
The finish is long, warm, and spicy with notes of herbs, black fruit, and an elegant mineral touch. The structure is robust and clearly offers potential for extended bottle aging. The Balthazar version further enhances this potential by slowing the development, allowing the wine to retain its youthful tension for longer.
official reviews
The Wine Advocate : 97 points – Monica Larner. She emphasizes the enormous concentration, the dark spices, the intensity of the black fruit, and the striking elegance compared to Cerretalto. According to her, the wine has a solid structure, very long lifespan, and exceptional precision.

In my mind, this is the wine that best represents the Casanova di Neri house style. With 30 months of aging in tonneaux, it shows enormous richness and texture, and the stellar fruit quality appears with more primary elegance compared to the more expensive Cerretalto that is released with an extra year of aging. That dynamic is especially pronounced in a comparison of the 2019 and 2018 vintages. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a dark vein of toasted spice, black fruit, ink, blackberry compote, licorice and star anise. Dark as night, it is exceptionally well crafted with a robust delivery of concentrated fruit and solid tannic structure. You can count on excellent cellar potential, or at a minimum, serve it with a classic steak. Production is exactly 69,696 bottles.
I am extremely encouraged by this year's tasting from Casanova di Neri. To my mind, we have witnessed the great "sorpasso" (or overtaking in English) in which a new wine (the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri) outperformed tried and true favorites like Cerretalto and Tenuta Nuova. This shows the deft talent and winemaking flexibility of Giacomo Neri, his sons and the entire winery team. Congratulations.

Black cherries with violets and other flowers on the nose. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Needs time to soften. Give it three to five years of bottle age. Better after 2025.

From: A Tale of Two Extremes: The 2020 Brunellos and 2019 Riservas (Nov 2024)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is an understated beauty, perfumed and highly aromatic, with a gorgeous blend of dried black cherry, clove, hints of sage and spiced blood orange. It is cool-toned and classic in feel, with silken textures and vibrant acidity that enlivens the core of tart red berry fruits. A cascade of violet and lavender tones resonate over a coating of fine-grained tannins as it flexes its structural muscle, tapering off long and potent and demanding the taster's attention. This will pay dividends in the cellar.

Revisiting Casanova di Neri this July was a fantastic opportunity to taste through the range of 2019s and 2020s (the 2019s were not included in last year's report). In my view, the Neri family represents one of the most significant evolutions in Montalcino. The wines have always possessed remarkable balance that allows them to age gracefully, yet they were once large-scaled, brooding and powerful. Today, there’s a new level of purity throughout the range but the same proportion of ripe fruit and character that is undeniably Casanova di Neri. Starting in 2017, the family began shortening maceration times and invested in an optical sorter. The differences in the wines are notable. The 2020s at this address are drop-dead gorgeous and may have been even more impressive if I hadn’t tasted them next to the 2019s. Both vintages of the Tenuta Nuova surpassed expectations. The late-release Cerretalto remains the powerhouse of this range yet comes across as harmonious from start to finish, even the 2018. But it’s the new Giovanni Neri Brunello that really turns my head (both the 2019 and 2020). Hailing from a 50-year-old vineyard near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this gorgeous wine has quickly risen to the top of the portfolio. The family spent years rehabilitating these old vines, and now we all reap the rewards. Of note, there will be no 2020 Cerretalto, with the fruit from that bottling going into the white label Brunello.
