Description
These Sangiove grosso grapes come from the Caprili vineyard, which is 335 metres above sea level and is planted with vines that have an average age of 15 years. These vines are planted close together (4,000 vines per hectare) and each vine yields an average of around 1.5 to 2 kg of grapes. For the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats, the family uses only natural yeasts; cultivated yeasts are out of the question here. During the soaking of the skins, a period of around 25 days, the temperature is closely monitored and corrected if necessary. At Caprili, the family believes that it should be between 28 and 30° Celsius. After fermentation, the Brunello-in-the-making is aged for three years in Slavonian oak barrels. These barrels have different capacities: 30, 40 and 60 hectolitres. Finally, the Brunello di Montalcino is left to rest in the bottle for at least 4 months, depending on the outcome of the fermentation, before it is released onto the market. This is a serious Brunello di Montalcino: fleshy, concentrated and with a powerful structure. The grainy tannin is beautifully ripe and comes across as firm yet friendly. The excellent balance between fruit aromas (mainly cherries), acids and tannin makes this wine very harmonious. Caprili's Brunello di Montalcino has spicy aromas of toasted oak and toasted almond husk.

The Caprili 2019 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a very pretty bouquet with a level of ripe fruit and pure cherry essence that does not come easily to a wine aged five years following the harvest. The primary fruit remains intact in this vintage. This village bottling shows velvety richness and concentration that stems directly from that exceptional fruit quality. There is rich texturing and fine chalky tannins to close. Some 55,000 bottles were made.
The Bartolommei family is presenting its 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva AdAlberto after skipping production of this top-end wine in the dry and very hot 2017 vintage. The 2018 edition feels advanced, with dark fruit and mature aromas. In other news, Caprili has put two new vineyards on line. The first is located in the Bolsignano area and the second is near the Passo del Lume Spento, one of the most exciting high-elevation subzones currently in the appellation, in my opinion.

Caprili
Brunello di Montalcino 2019 | $65
This red is all about finesse, delivering superb balance and complexity, with cherry, raspberry, earth and wild herb aromas and flavors. Succulent and charming, yet with a solid base of tannins and vivid acidity, this remains focused through the long aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2042. 4,575 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

From: Buckle Your Seatbelts: 2019 Brunello and 2021 Rosso di Montalcino (Dec 2023)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably pretty, wafting up with a blend of violets and lavender before giving way to steeped plum lifted by mint. This is racy and sleek, with cooling acidity and mineral tones that excite the palate. Juicy acidity enlivens tart wild berry fruits. The 2019 finds its center through the finish, as fine tannins emerge and a crunchy sensation lingers. Licorice and bitter blackberry notes taper off slowly. In a word, fantastic. The balance of complexity, structure and energy places the 2019 very high in my book.
