Description
The iconic 2019 version with the maximum 100/100 points from Suckling
" Wow! The aromas to this are really exceptional, with a tangerine edge to the blackcurrants, graphite, lead pencil, flowers and wet earth. It changes all the time. So expressive and refined. Full-bodied with great intensity and depth of fruit. The ultra-fine tannins display millions of layers. The texture on the palate is superb and lasts for minutes. This is the new 1974 George de Latour, which was a legend. Real Napa Valley red here. Drinkable now, to understand it, but truly great in five to six years and onwards Benchmark"
The wine is made from mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and some Petit Verdot. It is aged for 24 months in French oak (95% new barrels). The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has a fragrant bouquet of ripe dark berries, grape compote, black cherry, orange peel and black plum, alongside savoury perfumed notes of wild violet. rose petals, fresh spearmint, bay leaf and earth. Warm baking spice notes from the influence of French oak barrels add vanilla and caramel notes. Saturated dark fruit is present and voluminous on the palate, with a mouth-coating structure, with density and enveloping richness. Full and multi-layered secondary notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, savoury umami, leather, tobacco leaf and graphite add additional nuance and complexity. The signature “Rutherford Dust” tannins are pronounced, framing the wine and providing a firm grip, with a chewy, cocoa-powdered texture. The taste is lively and fresh with a balanced acidity. Certainly to mature for many years.

While the quality of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is indeed excellent, what may be even more impressive is that there are more than 12,000 cases of the stuff. Marked by scents of cherries, dusty earth, dried herbs and hints of cedar, it's full-bodied, silky and complex, with a lingering finish. It doesn't require much cellaring, but it should drink well for close to two decades. Nicely done.
Beaulieu Vineyard is often overlooked in the stable of wineries owned by Treasury, but the company has roughly 1,100 acres devoted to the brand. One of Napa's grand old wineries, it's now helmed by General Manager/Senior Winemaker Trevor Durling. Together, we tasted through the latest reds to come out under the classic BV label.

Cellar Selection - "Fascinating, fresh and ripe fruit flavors fill this full-bodied, velvety-textured wine with blackberries, raspberries and cranberries. Subtle oak spices add interest from the aroma through the finish. Decant this time-tested wine if drinking soon. Best from 2027–2040.” - Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast

The adventure of the Beaulieu Vineyard winery begins in 1900 when Georges de Latour and his wife bought 1.6 hectares of land in Rutherford. In 1940 they could expect the first vintage. It has since become one of the most historic wineries with Grand Cru status in Napa Valley. The quality is high and there is also a lot of innovation within the winery.
Legend has it that Fernande pronounced 'Quel beau lieu' when she first saw the country. Literally translated, this means 'what a beautiful place' and Beaulieu Vineyard derives its name from this. De Latour became known for importing Phylloxera-resistant vine rootstocks from Europe to rebuild California's recently devastated fledgling wine industry. After Prohibition, when most wineries were forced to close, Beaulieu Vineyard increased its business by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. church. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, De Latour devoted himself entirely to research and innovation to bring out the best expression of Rutherford Estate in the form of wine and he named it the Private Reserve which at the time was the private wine of the Latour family used to be.
In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released Private Reserve's first vintage and named it "Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon," a wine destined to become Napa Valley's first "cult wine." Today, Beaulieu Vineyard is known as one of the most historic wineries with Grand Cru status in Napa Valley and sets the standard for quality and innovation in Napa Valley wine production. It holds a unique place in California winery history and holds one of the most collected American Cabernet Sauvignons in the world.
