Description
Wine from the Portuguese Azores means an Atlantic Ocean injection. Wine has been made in the Azores, a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,400 kilometers west of Lisbon, since the sixteenth century. But so little that you hardly ever see the wines from the Azores on the European mainland. They make around 20,000 liters per year, which is approximately the annual harvest in the Azores. It's all white and a lot of it is fortified with alcohol. The wine is made from typical Portuguese grapes, such as Verdelho and Arinto. What is also still unknown, but certainly not unloved by wine connoisseurs, is quality because the Azores have a great climate for wine. The sea breeze ensures healthy grape vines that do not require chemical intervention. Moisture, sun and a large difference in temperature make the wines of the Azores incredibly beautiful. Without a doubt the most famous and renowned winery in the Azores is Azores Wine Company. They have perhaps one of the most unique terroirs in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and at the foot of the volcanic Mount Pico.
The Canada do Monte consists mainly of Arinto dos Açores (more than 95%, supplemented with Verdelho and Alicante Branco) from very old vines (60 to 80 years) matured for 12 months in 3rd year French oak. This great wine from the Azores has a firm finish with good depth and a rich texture. It has a dry 'Riesling-like' feel, plus a juicy and tense finish, driven by the fine acidity. Beautiful fruit with a sturdy backbone due to the acidity. The top wine from Azores Wine Company has a drinking window until at least 2034 and probably even longer. The Canada do Monte is only made in the good years. All bottles are numbered. Perhaps one of the most elegant wines we know!!
FACT: With some regularity, certain wines from Azores Wine Company are not made in specific vintages. All vineyards are located almost to the sea and if there are too many storms in late spring or summer (which has been happening more recently) then the vineyards an excess of salt from the spray of the sea. So what makes the wines of Azores Wine Company so unique (the freshness and saltiness) is also their biggest threat.

The 2019 Canada do Monte is mostly Arinto dos Açores (over 95%, as there are some other things in the field blend like Verdelho and Alicante Branco) from very old vines (60 to 80 years) aged for 12 months in third-use French oak. It comes in at 12.6% alcohol. This is almost a point down in alcohol from the 2018. While still one of the fruitier Azores, it isn't quite as dramatic this year, more understated and elegant. That will suit some just fine. Still excellent and equally well structured, it should age well.

They may have one of the most unique terroirs in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and at the foot of the volcanic mountain Pico, the vineyards are planted in the fractures of the rocks, next to the sea, where you can " singing the crabs ", because there is more sun and warmth. The extraordinary Azores wine company was founded in 2014 by two Azoreans, Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado, and the charismatic oenologist Rugby and the winemaker António Maçanita with only 12 hectares of vineyards , about 100 years old.
