Description
Wine from the Portuguese Azores means an Atlantic Ocean injection. Wine has been made in the Azores, a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,400 kilometers west of Lisbon, since the sixteenth century. But so little that you hardly ever see the wines from the Azores on the European mainland. They make around 20,000 liters per year, which is approximately the annual harvest in the Azores. It's all white and a lot of it is fortified with alcohol. The wine is made from typical Portuguese grapes, such as Verdelho and Arinto. What is also still unknown, but certainly not unloved by wine connoisseurs, is quality because the Azores have a great climate for wine. The sea breeze ensures healthy grape vines that do not require chemical intervention. Moisture, sun and a large difference in temperature make the wines of the Azores incredibly beautiful. Without a doubt the most well-known and renowned winery in the Azores is Azores Wine Company. They have perhaps one of the most unique terroirs in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and at the foot of the volcanic Mount Pico, the vineyards are planted in the fractures of the rocks, next to the sea, where you can enjoy the " singing of the crabs", because there is more sun and warmth there.
This 100% Arinto dos Açores is an indigenous breed and therefore exclusive to the Azores Islands. Despite what the name suggests, the Arinto dos Açores is not related to the Arinto. When the grapes are perfectly ripe, they are harvested by hand and taken in baskets to the press where the entire bunches are pressed. The juice undergoes fermentation in small stainless steel tanks from 600 to 100L. Given the extremely low yields and the complexity of vineyards located on the high tide line of the sea, this wine will be a so-called Non Vintage from 2024 and the wine will be grown in a Solorea system where bottling takes place from there. 3,333 were made from the Azores Wine Company Arinto Dos Açores. All bottles are numbered. See our 360-degree viewer for more information.
On the nose, the Azores Wine Company Arinto Dos Açores Solera is fresh, salty and aromas with notes of grapefruit. In the mouth very present minerality and acidity, good persistence and salty notes. The salty notes in this wine and the direct influence of the sea make it a perfect accompaniment to beautifully fried cod, plaice or dab (but it is delicious with any sea fish). Magnificent with platter fruits de mer, grilled fish and maritime salads.

The 2018 Arinto dos Açores is unoaked, bone dry (half a gram of residual sugar) and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. This has big acidity, making it jump to life on the tongue. It's bright and a little spicy. That zippy nuance on the finish makes it lively and interesting. Then, there is the grip and length on the finish as well. This is lip-smacking good on many fronts, a fine effort in the brand. It is also one that seems poised to age well. It evolved beautifully in the glass and fleshed out with air and warmth. I would still pick the 2015 (not here this issue) as my sentimental best of the brand so far, but this could develop into it with a year of age. It is a fine contender. It does need to prove it can age, though. That is still an open question to some extent. There were 14,970 bottles produced.
