Description
Wine from the Portuguese Azores means an Atlantic ocean injection. Wine has been made in the Azores, a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,400 kilometers west of Lisbon, since the sixteenth century. But so little that you hardly ever see the wines from the Azores on the European mainland. They make around 20,000 liters per year, which is approximately the annual harvest in the Azores. It's all white and a lot of it is fortified with alcohol. The wine is made from typical Portuguese grapes, such as Verdelho and Arinto. What is also still unknown, but certainly not unloved by wine connoisseurs, is quality because the Azores have a great climate for wine. The sea breeze ensures healthy grape vines that do not require chemical intervention. Moisture, sun and a large difference in temperature make the wines of the Azores incredibly beautiful. Without a doubt the most famous and renowned winery in the Azores is Azores Wine Company. They have perhaps one of the most unique terroirs in the world, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and at the foot of the volcanic Mount Pico.
The Canada do Monte consists mainly of Arinto dos Açores (more than 95%, supplemented with Verdelho and Alicante Branco) from very old vines (60 to 80 years) matured for 12 months in 3rd year French oak. This great wine from the Azores has a firm finish with good depth and a rich texture. It has a dry 'Riesling-like' feel, plus a juicy and tense finish, driven by the fine acidity. Beautiful fruit with a sturdy backbone due to the acidity. The top wine from Azores Wine Company has a drinking window until at least 2034 and probably even longer. The Canada do Monte is only made in the good years. All bottles are numbered. Perhaps one of the most elegant wines we know!!
FACT: With some regularity, certain wines from Azores Wine Company are not made in specific vintages. All vineyards are located almost to the sea and if there are too many storms in late spring or summer (which has been happening more recently) then the vineyards an excess of salt from the spray of the sea. So what makes the wines of Azores Wine Company so unique (the freshness and saltiness) is also their biggest threat.

The 2021 Canada do Monte is mostly Arinto dos Açores (over 95%, as there are some other things in the field blend like Verdelho and Alicante Branco) from very old vines (60 to 80 years) aged for 12 months in a 70/30 mixture of stainless steel and third-use French oak. It comes in at 13.3% alcohol. This has a brighter feel than, say, the Aards this issue, livelier and better integrated. It is gloriously fresh and not as stern as the Aards. That projects greater depth in terms of mouthfeel and more power, but this is more easily approachable today. Of course, these are only relative comparisons, since they both do everything brilliantly. As with the Aards, this has to age a bit and develop to justify my enthusiasm. It looks like it should do that, with another 10 to 15 years of aging possible from today, maybe more. We'll see. None of these as yet have long track records, but they certainly have impressive structure. There were 1,033 bottles produced.
The 2021 vintage was again a very low yield vintage, due to ocean storms in April. The area of Criação Velha escaped, because floraision had finished. From a rain point of view, it wasn’t [either] a wet vintage (like 2014, 2016, 2019) or a very dry vintage (like 2013, 2015, 2018) ... it is somewhere in between," perhaps most similar to 2017 and 2020, says the winery.
The splendor of this winery is not news anymore. There is a lot of great stuff to explore. I love them. The remaining problem, though, is the often hideous price points. It makes it hard to justify a "buy" recommendation in many cases, and the prices keep increasing for new brands, like the Aards in this report at $550 a bottle (360 euros in Portugal). More importantly, most consumers are going to be shut out. While the wines are very good, it's hard to say they are worth that or anything close (not that they are all that pricey). If you have a chance to experience them, though, you'll love them if you're a "fresh white and structure" kinda drinker. If you think those steely dry Rieslings with the sharp edges are for you, so are these.

The extraordinary Azores wine company was founded in 2014 by two Azoreans, Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado, and the charismatic oenologist Rugby and the winemaker António Maçanita with only 12 hectares of vineyards , about 100 years old.
