Description
One of the best Vino Nobile wines from Montepulciano. To obtain the very best quality, this wine is produced exclusively in the very best vintages. The Vino Nobile Asinone is generally made from 100% of the well-known Tuscan grape variety - Sangiovese. The vineyards are located at an altitude of about 350 meters near the old town of Montepulciano. The soil type is clay with stones. After the harvest and fermentation of 16 to 18 days, the maturation process continues in French oak barriques for a period of 16 to 18 months. The vineyards for the production of the Asinone were planted in 1963 and 1991 respectively. In the nose we smell black fruit, plums, vanilla. The taste has a firm attack with black fruit, vanilla, complex, minerals, a lot of concentration, ripe tannins but after the first attack the wine becomes surprisingly fresh with a lot of liveliness and freshness. The wine is not a blockbuster but rather a wine with great finesse.

This wine is born in a 12-hectare parcel with calcareous clay soils at a cool 350 to 450 meters above sea level. The Poliziano 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone reinforces a familiar house style with an emphasis on soft extraction, rich texture and dark fruit flavors. All of this is framed by generous oak spice and tannins. This full-bodied wine closes with blackberry, vanilla cream and and toasted cinnamon. Production is 25,000 bottles.
The big news from Poliziano is that since the wines reviewed here were made, the estate is now certified for organics.

A tense and mineral expression here with fine spices and pure red berries. This is transparent and understated on the palate with crumbled fine tannins that linger with the minerals and berries in a long, intense finish. Drink now.

From: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Making Wine in The New Normal (Oct 2023)
The 2020 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone holds the attention firmly with a mentholated mix of crushed blackberries, cedar shavings and a cocoa dusting. This smooths across the palate with soft and plaint textures and ripe wild berry fruits as a gentle coating of sweet tannins mounts toward the close. The 2020 leaves the palate stained with primary concentration, finishing long. This warm vintage Asinone will be the perfect option while waiting for the more structured vintages to mature.

Poliziano excels through its two single-vineyard wines in the 2019 vintage. Last year, it was the Asinone that stood out amongst its peers, and this year, I was reminded of the perfect combination of vintage power and house style from Le Caggiole. There’s a polish to the Poliziano wines, yet expertly accomplished in a way that terroir shines through uninterrupted. Both wines will be upgraded to the new Pieve designation in the coming years. As for 2020, the Asinone shows the year's warmth through its ripe fruit and supple textures yet finds a lovely balance. It will be an early drinking Asinone, but it is perfect to hold us over as the 2019 slowly matures. Federico Carletti remains the family's winemaker, aided by the third-generation Maria Stella and Francesco Carletti.

Frederico Carletti, the current owner of Azienda Agricola Poliziano, is responsible for a revolutionary change. Carletti has turned Poliziano into a real wine-producing company, which produces and bottles its own wines. He went to Piemonte to learn the profession of an enologist at the university. He then did internships with various wine producers to gain the necessary practical experience. Then it was time to realize his childhood dream. Since taking office in 1981, the company's star has risen rapidly. His innovations included the planting of new grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the creation of new wines, such as Le Stanze, Elegia and a Riserva from separate vineyards, such as the Vigna Asinone. With these showpieces, Carletti has won the hearts of wine lovers and has won numerous prizes at international competitions. Poliziano is now widely regarded as one of the great pioneers of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
