Description
Penfolds is Australia's oldest and most iconic winery with a history and legacy that reflects the country's journey from colonial settlement to the modern era. The winery was founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold who, together with his wife, emigrated from England to South Australia to plant his vines obtained from France at Magill Estate. The reason for this was not to make the best wine in Australia, but to find a cure for anemia. Christopher believed in the medicinal properties of wine and used this in his GP practice which was growing in reputation.
The Australian wine industry, and therefore Penfolds, changed dramatically with the arrival of winemaker Max Schubert who created world famous Grange and Bin wines. In 1988 Max Schubert was named 'Man of the year' by Decanter Magazine and Penfolds Grange 1955 is now listed as a national heritage site. Penfolds has an extraordinary collection of awards and with each generation of winemakers, Max Schubert's remarkable vision is nurtured and strengthened. Today, Peter Gago is the 'Guardian of the Grange' and sets the standard for all Penfolds wines. It was even named 'Most Admired Wine Brand' by Drinks International in early 2019 and many more awards are likely to follow
Yattarna is the result of one of the most extensive, focused and highly publicized wine development projects ever undertaken in Australia. The drive and independence of spirit of generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the ambition to create a white wine that would set the standard for ultra-fine Australian chardonnay. The Penfolds Chardonnay South Australia Yattarna 2018 is a mix of Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills fruit, so a real cool-climate Chafdonnay. This Penfolds Yattarna has an intense, stony and mineral freshness with a flint-like edge and a richness of lemon, white peaches and crushed stones in the nose. The flavor has such a striking and intense depth.

Cool-climate fruit from Tasmania, Tumbarumba and the Adelaide Hills, barrel fermented and matured eight months in 60% new French barriques, the 2018 Yattarna Chardonnay starts off with aromas of roasted nuts and toasted bread set against a backdrop of tart, citrusy fruit. Medium-bodied, there's just enough flesh to let you know this is Chardonnay—maybe a hint of underripe peach or nectarine—but this is more about line and length, with a strong backbone of acidity that drives the flavors forward into a long, mouth-puckering finish. Impressive, yes. But is it really that enjoyable? Maybe down the road, which is the intention.

A blend of Tasmania, Tumbarumba and Adelaide Hills fruit, this has an intense, stony and mineral freshness with a flinty edge and a wealth of lemon sherbet, white peaches and crushed stones on the nose. Oak is deeply buried. The palate has such striking and intense depth. It’s layered and long and really asserts itself as the most complex and most powerful chardonnay in this release. The depth and pristine grade of fruit here are impressive. Deep, pithy finish. Drink over the next eight years. Screw cap.

Opaque ruby. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes ripe dark fruits, espresso, candied violet, vanilla and sandalwood, and an exotic spice nuance emerges slowly. Conveys a suave blend of depth and energy to sweet blueberry, kirsch and fruitcake flavors, supported by a core of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and spicy lift on the youthfully tannic finish, which strongly echoes the blue fruit and floral notes.
