Description
Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. Combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders' sole goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Like all great works, Opus One was born out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromising quality, Opus One's sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.
This Opus One from Napa Valley is one of the very best vintages and is very comparable to a top Pauillac. This vintage of Opus One boasts incredible purity, with fruit notes of black currant, blueberry, dark chocolate, and fresh herbs. It's full-bodied with refined tannins. The wine finishes with a long, layered, creamy finish. This wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon blend of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec. This estate has been crafting great Cabernet-based wines for the past 10 years. Drink it for the next 30+ years.
This is a 1.5 litre magnum – even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Opus One soars out of the glass with bright, bold boysenberries, warm cassis and ripe, juicy black plums notes, plus emerging nuances of lilacs, oolong tea, cinnamon stick, tilled soil and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with tightly wound layers of crunchy black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with lifted fruitiness and on a lingering mineral note.
During my recent visit to Opus One, I tasted five vintages of the "grand vin," including a barrel sample of the 2019, which will be published separately in a dedicated report.
Comparing the 2018 vintage with 2019, winemaker Michael Silacci commented, "There’s a little more richness to 2019. 2018 is elegant, and that's not an excuse for being lighter. I like the intensity of the 2018s—2019 is a bit above it. 2018 was cooler with a little bit more acidity."
Both vintages are a triumph at Opus One and a testament to the subtle changes that Silacci and his team have been conducting in the vineyards and winery over the last 15+ years. Bravo!

From: The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)
The 2018 Opus One is absolutely exquisite. Bright red berry fruit, crushed flowers, mint and spice are all finely cut. The 2018 impresses with its energy and focus. It's a gorgeous wine, and is also showing especially well today, with all of the potential I first saw in barrel very much on display. Bright acids linger on the persistent finish. The 2018 is supremely elegant.

In the early 1990s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the world-renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, made a trip to Napa Valley. Impressed by the potential for winemaking in this Californian region, he asked local experts who he should meet. Without hesitation, Robert Mondavi was recommended, a pioneer in the American wine industry.
Robert Mondavi: the pioneer behind Opus One
Robert Mondavi, who started his own winery in Napa Valley in 1966 after leaving his family business, was known for his passion and drive for wine. His dream was to put Napa Valley on the map as a top wine region. When he met Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it sparked a unique opportunity to launch an extraordinary wine project: the birth of Opus One.
The fusion of Bordeaux and Napa Valley wine styles
In 1976, Mondavi and the baron met to discuss the details of their collaboration. This partnership resulted in the creation of a wine that combined the elegance of Bordeaux with the power of Napa Valley. The first wine, simply called “Opus,” was made in 1979 using a blend of Mondavi’s finest wines. In 1980, the joint venture was officially announced to the world, and the name “Opus One” was born.
The first successful auction of Opus One
Opus One quickly established itself as the first American ultra-premium wine. This was evident during a Napa Valley auction, where a case of Opus One fetched an impressive $24,000—at the time, the highest price ever paid for a Californian wine.
Opus One: a world-class vineyard
In 1991, Opus One's own winery was built, surrounded by 69 hectares of vineyards where varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec are cultivated. Every year, Opus One attracts around 60,000 visitors, who can visit the winery by appointment only.
Opus One is now recognized as one of the most iconic wines in the world. The collaboration between Mondavi and Rothschild has produced a wine that embodies both the elegance of Bordeaux and the rich flavors of Napa Valley. Opus One remains a benchmark for ultra-premium wines and is a must for any serious wine collector.
