Description
The Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is like all Lokoya wines made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, of which 95-97% are new. Deep garnet purple in color in the glass, it rolls effortlessly out of the glass with notes of warm cassis, black cherry, mulberry and plum preserves plus hints of dark chocolate, crushed stone and tree bark with a touch of truffles. The full palate is densely laden with earthy/savory layers of black fruit and super-firm, rugged tannins, which makes for a tightly wound, lively finish. Of this 2018 vintage, (only) 1,001 bottles were made and it is a true collector's item.
The Howell Mountain vineyard sits at an elevation of over 2,100 feet. This elevation, coupled with the daily fresh air from the Pacific Ocean, means that wines from the mountainous slopes of Napa Valley need time to develop and reach their full potential. The deep tannin structure and flavor concentration of Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon provide the optimal profile for aging. These are wines meant to sit and mature for 30+ years, so give it a good 5 years in the bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years.

Blackberry, blueberry, pine cone and pine needle with some mushroom. So complex. Full bodied with incredible depth and length. Layered. Super balance and strength, yet formed and not overdone. Harmony for Howell. Try in 2026.

From: Napa Valley’s Thrilling 2018s & 2019s, Parts 1 & 2 (Jan 2021)
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a wine of tremendous power and gravitas. Inky dark fruit, graphite, cured meat and smoke all meld together in a virile, imposing wine loaded with character. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, as it is quite the powerhouse. Swaths of imposing Howell Mountain tannins wrap around the palate. Even so, the 2018 has more than enough volume and resonance to balance things out.

Lokoya, Founded in 1995 is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley's most celebrated mountain appellations: Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain. These limited production wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered, resulting in the purest expression of the terroir. All vineyard locations can shine with the climate, soil and sunlight all fully reflected in the glass.
Given the high location, the vineyards require constant attention. The deep understanding of the vineyard trajectory in each vintage comes from winemaker Christopher Carpenter's years of expertise. Intervention is kept to a minimum, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, allowing the fruit to express itself as naturally and eloquently as possible. At Lokoya they call this MOUNTAIN WINEMAKING.
All wines have the highest possible ratings from international wine critics such as Parker, Wine Spectator and Suckling and are all in the 95-100 region. The wines belong in the list with Harlan and Bond.
