Description

The Fuligni family lived in the Tuscan Maremma at the beginning of the 20th century. To escape malaria, the family moved to Montalcino and in 1923 bought the Cottimelli estate from Gontrano Biondi Santi, named after the 16th-century monastery that stood there. This is the classic area where Brunello had always been produced. Fuligni also bought an 18th-century palazzo in the centre of Montalcino with beautiful vaulted cellars where wines are still aged today. The vines, which extend over ten hectares, are located mainly in Cottimelli at altitudes ranging from 380 to 450 metres above sea level. Here the land, which is mainly oriented towards the east, belongs entirely to the geological formation of Santa Fiora (marl) of Eocene origin and consists of predominantly rocky terrain.

The Brunello di Montalcino from Eredi Fuligni has already received the magical score of 100/100 from James Suckling and is ranked number 8 in the Top 100 best wines of 2019. Fuligni is also on Parker's shortlist of the best wine estates in Montalcino.

The SJ (SAN JACOPO) Rosso Toscane is a beautiful Rosso but in a different way because SJ comes from a blend of Sangiovese grapes from our own vines and Merlot (often around 40%) from the Bandita vineyard which has matured for 6-9 months in French oak tonneaux. Because of the amount of Merlot this is an IGT and we could call it a Supertuscan.

Juicy, rich and expressive, the Rosso Toscane SJ jumps out of your glass with black cherry, tobacco, new leather and licorice notes. The addition of Merlot gives the wine its richness and generosity in the mid-palate and softens the wine just a fraction while retaining the brilliant quality and freshness of the Sangiovese grape. A beautiful glass from one of Tuscany's finest houses.

Tagliatelle with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese
The earthy tones of mushrooms complement the spiciness and structure of the wine beautifully. The Parmesan enhances the umami in the dish and is nicely captured by the acids and tannins in the wine.

Veal schnitzel with sage and lemon
The tender veal and the freshness of the lemon match the refinement of the wine. The sage matches the spicy notes of the San Jacopo. The wine is elegant enough not to overpower the dish, but structured enough to support the whole.

Roasted chicken with rosemary and garlic
The medium body of the wine is ideal with roast chicken with Mediterranean herbs. The light fats in the meat and the savouriness of rosemary and garlic enhance the fruity core of the wine.

Lasagna with beef and béchamel sauce
The hearty layers of meat, sauce and pasta call for a wine with freshness and structure. The acidity in the San Jacopo keeps the dish balanced, while the ripe fruit goes well with the tomato sauce.

Eggplant from the oven with tomato and mozzarella (Melanzane alla Parmigiana)
A vegetarian dish with rich flavours. The wine offers enough freshness to balance the fat of the cheese and matches the taste perfectly with the fried aubergine and spicy tomato sauce.

The Fuligni family lived in the Tuscan Maremma at the beginning of the 20th century. To escape the malaria, the family moved to Montalcino and in 1923 bought the Cottimelli estate from Gontrano Biondi Santi, named after the 16th-century monastery that stood there. This is the classic zone where Brunello has always been made. Fuligni also bought an 18th century palazzo in the center of Montalcino with beautiful vaulted cellars where wines are still aged today. In 1971, after the death of her father, Maria Flora Fuligni took over the family estate and changed course.

He bought 100 hectares of land, of which 10 hectares are planted in vineyards and is located in an almost continuous strip on the eastern side of Montalcino, where historically Brunello's most authentic production originated. The vines, which extend over ten hectares, are mainly located in Cottimelli at altitudes ranging from 380 to 450 meters above sea level. Here the land, which is mostly oriented towards the east, belongs entirely to the geological formation of Santa Fiora (marl) of Eocene origin and consists of mostly rocky terrain. The lion of San Marco on the label betrays the Venetian origin of the Fuligni family. Fuligni has bought another small vineyard in the south of 2 hectares. The canes were planted around the year 2,000, with a planting density between 3,300 and 5,000 canes per ha. About 1 bottle of wine is produced per stick. The harvest is done manually and involves the personal participation of the owners with often repeated walks between the rows of vines to ensure a rigorous selection of grapes. The different vineyards of Fuligni, S. Giovanni, Il Piano, Ginestreto and La Bandita are harvested separately according to their type of land and exposure, then brought together respecting the type of wine they become (Brunello, Brunello Reserve , Rosso DOC ).
