Description
Parker and Suckling are pretty much unanimous and here Fuligni is on the shortlist of the best wine estates in Montalcino. Matured according to the regulations for four years, of which about two and a half years in oak. With its elegant combination of fruit and spicy aromas, Fuligni Brunello is in any case the result of carefully selected grapes with low yields per hectare and is not produced in years when the quality of the harvested grapes is not suitable for the high standards of the estate.
The grapes are picked very carefully for ripeness and quality. The basis of the high quality of the Brunello is laid by the very low yield of the vines. In the vineyards the vines are planted at a density of 3,300 vines per ha and 5,000 vines per ha. The yield of a plant is maximum 1 bottle. The Brunello di Montalcino is fragrant and delicate and shows a level of precision and elegance that pushes the boundaries of this great vintage. The wine is fresh and lively with enough primary fruit and acidity to carry over decades of cellar ageing. The bouquet reveals a slow succession of wild berries, rose, crushed flowers and graphite aromas with spices and liquorice. The mouthfeel is structured, firm and built to last. 2016 was a beautiful vintage as the connoisseurs know with a very long aging potential. Parker (95/100) ends his review with: " ...and one I am happy to recommend. "

Pappardelle with game ragù (for example hare or deer)
The firm structure and earthiness of the game perfectly complement the tannins and spicy notes of Brunello. The rich sauce makes the whole thing fuller, while the acids in the wine keep the dish in balance.
Roasted beef with rosemary and garlic
A classic pairing. The juiciness and umami of beef support the wine, while rosemary and garlic accentuate the spiciness in Brunello. Think entrecote, roast beef or bavette.
Polenta with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese
The earthiness of mushrooms and the savoriness of Parmesan perfectly complement the leather and spice flavors in the wine. Polenta provides structure and softens the tannins.
Chicken cacciatore (stew with tomatoes, peppers and olives)
The tomato sauce with Mediterranean flavors has enough acidity and spice to match nicely with Brunello. The wine supports the heartiness of the dish without overpowering it.
Aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano
The salt crystals and pronounced flavour of these hard cheeses make an elegant finish or matching intermediate course. They enhance the ripe fruit and balance the tannins.

March 2023 Week 1, The Wine Advocate
The Fuligni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its smooth integration of aromas and the carefully balanced intensity achieved here, which shows momentum but also remains very fine and nuanced. There are many sides to the bouquet with wild fruit, cassis, crushed stone, candied orange and fresh herbs or rosemary. A floral note also appears that suggests rose or iris root. The tannins are very well managed and silky. You hardly feel them, yet the wine offers firm structure throughout. This is a production of 35,000 bottles and one I am happy to recommend.
The Fuligni Family makes some very nice wines from the cool northeastern side of the appellation. The vines are located at 380 to 450 meters above sea level, and the soils sees a mix of galestro clay and tuff rock.

From: 2018 Brunello di Montalcino: The Rubik’s Cube Vintage (Dec 2022)
It takes a good amount of time for the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino to open in the glass, as a cloud of white smoke gives way to a sweetly scented mix of dried roses, sugar-dusted cherries and hints of exotic spice. This is a round and supple 2018, communicating elegance through its velvety textures, polished ripe red fruits and cascading inner violet florals. There’s opulence here, yet also the acidity to balance, as the 2018 tapers off long with classically refined tannins, yet leaves the palate perfectly reset for another sip. Frankly, it’s hard to put this glass down. There will be no Riserva produced in 2018, and so all of that juice was used to bolster this open-knit and seductive Brunello.
- By Eric Guido on October 2022
Fuligni is located just northeast of the town of Montalcino, and encompasses over 100 hectares of wheat, olive groves and forest, yet with only twelve hectares planted to vines. Oenologist Jacopo Vagaggini explained that he considers 2018 a more classic and cooler vintage but not difficult. However, the team needed to be highly selective and perform well-timed leaf and canopy management to avoid disease due to humidity. As for many producers in the north, the return to perfect weather at the end of September saved the day. The Fuligni estate Brunello is an open-knit and seductive wine that benefited from the inclusion of the old-vine juice, which would usually be used to for the Riserva.

The Fuligni family lived in the Tuscan Maremma at the beginning of the 20th century. To escape the malaria, the family moved to Montalcino and in 1923 bought the Cottimelli estate from Gontrano Biondi Santi, named after the 16th-century monastery that stood there. This is the classic zone where Brunello has always been made. Fuligni also bought an 18th century palazzo in the center of Montalcino with beautiful vaulted cellars where wines are still aged today. In 1971, after the death of her father, Maria Flora Fuligni took over the family estate and changed course.
He bought 100 hectares of land, of which 10 hectares are planted in vineyards and is located in an almost continuous strip on the eastern side of Montalcino, where historically Brunello's most authentic production originated. The vines, which extend over ten hectares, are mainly located in Cottimelli at altitudes ranging from 380 to 450 meters above sea level. Here the land, which is mostly oriented towards the east, belongs entirely to the geological formation of Santa Fiora (marl) of Eocene origin and consists of mostly rocky terrain. The lion of San Marco on the label betrays the Venetian origin of the Fuligni family. Fuligni has bought another small vineyard in the south of 2 hectares. The canes were planted around the year 2,000, with a planting density between 3,300 and 5,000 canes per ha. About 1 bottle of wine is produced per stick. The harvest is done manually and involves the personal participation of the owners with often repeated walks between the rows of vines to ensure a rigorous selection of grapes. The different vineyards of Fuligni, S. Giovanni, Il Piano, Ginestreto and La Bandita are harvested separately according to their type of land and exposure, then brought together respecting the type of wine they become (Brunello, Brunello Reserve , Rosso DOC ).
