Description
In wine, nothing is as constant as the land. Vintages offer variation, as do winemakers and owners. Mother Nature is fickle and always wants the last word. But the land is a constant, its geology and composition unalterable. At the heart of every great wine lies a piece of land unlike any other. Eisele Vineyard, first planted to vines in the 1880s, is located in the northeastern Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the foot of the Palisades Mountains. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000. The wines produced from this remarkable site have a rare combination of frank character with precisely defined flavors and fine textures, deep concentration without any sense of heaviness, and the ability to develop deep complexity with age. The Eisele Vineyard was originally planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, and has been continuously vined ever since. The first Cabernet was planted in 1964. Besides the Cabernet, Eisele is now also famous for their Sauvignon Blanc. Fantastic white from Napa Valley with again a great storage potential.
The 2018 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet is one of the finest and most terroir-driven vintages. Very subtle and elegant, the wine reveals a nose of intense blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry, with a scent of roses, crushed stones, tobacco box and cocoa beans. The mouthfeel is full and silky, with layers of black and red fruits, spicy cinnamon, vanilla and earthy notes that explode. The character of the Eisele Vineyard terroir is unmistakable in this vintage: a precisely delineated structure, spicy tannins and an incredibly refined texture, combined with a great freshness of floral and mineral notes, ending in a very long, velvety finish. The Eisele Vineyard - Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly appreciated wine among wine lovers for its complex taste and its rich, full structure. It is a wine that goes perfectly with grilled or braised meat dishes and also with a strong cheese. This wine is suitable to drink now, but can also be stored for a few years. In the ratings this wine often gets high marks.

The very deep, purple-black colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It takes a fair amount of swirling to unlock an incredibly intense nose of dark chocolate, warm cassis, baked plums and Morello cherries plus touches of red roses, violets, pencil shavings, cinnamon stick and dusty soil with a hint of iron ore. The full-bodied palate is so exquisitely elegant, charged with electric black and red fruits and a firm frame of super-ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and very perfumed. This is pure energy in a glass!
“2018 was nice for us—it was an easy vintage,” Eisele Vineyard’s winemaker Helene Mingot told me last year. “The conditions for ripening were ideal. It was a nice, cool summer. We didn’t have too much problem with vigor. Our vines are 25 years old, so our yields remained 2.5 to three tons per acre. It was a long harvest because we could harvest when we wanted. This year was the highest color we ever recorded!”
During my visit this year, she added, “These 2018s were not so easy to age. It was hard to know what direction to take—the amount of racking, toast level, etc. The wines had a different structure and freshness, the polymerization dynamic was different from previous vintages.”
In addition to the Altagracia and Cabernet Sauvignon, Eisele Vineyard revealed a new wine for 2018: Pickett. It is essentially a “third wine.” “It was developed to give us more selection for Altagracia,” managing director Antoine Donnedieu told me. “Altagracia continues its trajectory to become the best expression of our eastern vineyards. The new Pickett wine receives a little less time in barrel and less new oak than the other two reds, designed for earlier consumption."

Blackberry, dried-blueberry, bitter-chocolate and some volcanic-ash and burnt-orange aromas. Crushed stone and subtle vanilla notes, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins framing a deep core of dark fruit. Dense, muscular and firmly structured. So long. Goes on for minutes. Elegance with power. Really love the beautiful refinement and integrity to this. Captures the essence of the vintage. Try from 2025.

Eisele Vineyard, first planted with vines in the 1880s, is located in the northeastern Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the base of the Palisades Mountains. Grown organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, the site has been devoted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon for the last fifty years. Beginning with its inaugural release called Eisele in 1971, this iconic vineyard has consistent recognition for owning one of Napa Valley's great terroirs. The wines invariably express the exceptional depth, elegance and longevity that characterize the Eisele vineyard.
Since 1971, some of California's most famous Cabernet Sauvignons have been made from grapes grown in the Eisele Vineyard, located on an alluvial slope near the north end of the Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains to the north and cooled by the western breezes of the Chalk Hill Gap, this 38-acre vineyard is planted on well-drained boulder soils that produce a low-yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit.
The wines produced in this remarkable place have a rare combination of frank character with precisely defined flavors and fine textures, deep concentration without any sense of heaviness, and the ability to develop deep complexity with age. The Eisele vineyard was originally planted in the 1880s in Zinfandel and Riesling, and has been continuously covered with vines ever since. The first Cabernet was planted in 1964. In addition to the Cabernet, Eisele is now also famous with their Sauvignon Blanc. Fantastic white from Napa Valley with great aging potential again.
