Description
The Jean-Jacques Confuron estate and its tradition in Vosne-Romanée
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is one of Vosne-Romanée's classic winemakers. For decades, the estate has focused on low yields, healthy vineyards, and a traditional approach to Pinot Noir. The estate is led by Alain and Sophie Meunier-Confuron, who have further refined the style towards precision and refinement. The wines are distinguished by their purity, deep structure, and expressive aromas. Confuron owns plots in some of the most prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and is prized by connoisseurs for the consistent quality of both Village wines and Grand Crus.
Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru and its exceptional location
Romanée-Saint-Vivant lies in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, surrounded by iconic plots. The soil consists of limestone with layers of clay and marl, which creates finesse, tension, and mineral depth. Its eastern-slope location allows for even ripening of the Pinot Noir, while maintaining freshness and aromatic precision. Romanée-Saint-Vivant is known for wines that demonstrate both power and elegance, with softer tannins than, for example, Richebourg or La Tâche, yet with comparable complexity and length. It is a Grand Cru with an aromatic, refined signature that is instantly recognizable.
The style and working methods of Domaine Confuron
Confuron works traditionally, paying close attention to the natural expression of the fruit. The grapes are rigorously selected and always harvested by hand. Vinification proceeds gently, with controlled extraction focused on finesse rather than volume. The wines are aged in French oak, with the Grand Crus receiving a high percentage of new oak to support structure and depth. The estate does not filter the wines, allowing them to retain their full texture and develop well in the bottle. The result is a distinctive style characterized by precision, length, and elegance.
The 2020 vintage in Romanée-Saint-Vivant
The 2020 vintage yielded concentrated, healthy grapes with a remarkably fresh acidity. Despite the warm summer, the wines remained clear, precise, and pure. Pinot Noir achieved beautiful phenolic ripeness without becoming overripe. For Confuron, this represented an ideal balance between power and refinement. The 2020 Romanée-Saint-Vivant displays a combination of depth, aromatic tension, and elegance, exactly what fans of this Grand Cru hope for. It is a wine that already has charm, but is primarily intended for long aging.
Vinification, maturation and character of the wine
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected. Fermentation took place with gentle extraction, befitting the estate's style. A high proportion of new French oak was used for aging, which supports the structure without overpowering it. The oak was fully incorporated in 2020, preserving the fruit's clarity. The wine has a soft structure with refined tannins and already displays great aromatic precision. It is expected to continue to develop for at least another fifteen to twenty years.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2020 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru
The color is deep ruby red with a vibrant sheen. The nose opens with raspberry, black cherry, violet, and subtle spices. As the wine is exposed, notes of forest floor, fine minerality, and light floral accents emerge. The palate is elegant, layered, and slender in structure, yet with a distinct intensity. The tannins are silky, and the acidity provides tension and length. The palate combines dark berries, spices, mineral notes, and a soft, long finish. The finish is complex and lingering, with a delicate freshness that invites further aging.

Dried flower and some earth notes to the mulberry and blue plum fruit. It’s deep, woodsy and seductive. Medium-bodied. Lovely integrated tannins. Long and delicious. Drink now or hold.

From: Through the Other Side: Burgundy 2016 in Bottle (Oct 2019)
The 2016 Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet. The fruit is darker than its peers: blackberry, boysenberry, hints of blueberry and crushed violet petals. This is quintessential Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly judged acidity. This is endowed with disarming structure and poise, fanning out beautifully towards the finish. A fabulous wine but it deserves a decade in the cellar. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. The winery owns almost 13 hectares of vineyard divided over 12 AOCs, all located in the Côte de Nuits. The vines are very old, some more than 90 years. In 1988, Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron took over this beautiful family estate. It is undoubtedly one of the best domains in Burgundy. It is Alain Meunier who makes it his life's goal to keep his Burgundy wines at a high level. He sees the vineyards and the grapes as a living thing, something that requires constant attention. Almost unbelievable but it is true that this man performs the work manually as much as possible. As a result, one does not see tractors among his vineyards, but winegrowers on horseback. This is a costly and intensive way of working, but he is convinced that it does have a beneficial effect in the glass. Alain Meunier is a very modest and timid man, but very sympathetic and devoted to his vineyards with all his heart. His wife Sophie, in contrast to her husband, is a lot of liveliness and spontaneity. She takes care of the commercial side and the administration.
In the cellars he combines old methods with the most modern techniques. Some age-old methods have proven their worth, modern techniques allow everything to be refined and better controlled, says the oenologist at Jean-Jacques Confuron. Confuron's wines undergo a traditional red wine-making process. The wines mature in oak casks; for the Grand Cru 80-100% new, for the other wines between 30-50% new. The wines are clarified with proteins, they are not filtered.
