Description
The Jacques Prieur estate
Domaine Jacques Prieur is one of Burgundy's most established wineries and has played a key role in the development of leading wines from the Côte d'Or since the late 19th century. Located in Meursault, the estate owns vineyards in several prestigious appellations. The Prieur family has been joined by the Labruyère family for years, making tradition and modern vision a natural combination. Under the leadership of winemaker Nadine Gublin, the quality level has been further refined in recent decades. Her approach revolves around precision, tension, and a consistent focus on balance in the wine. This makes the wines recognizable by their pure style and layered aromas.
The location and significance of Chambertin Grand Cru
Chambertin Grand Cru forms the historic heart of Gevrey Chambertin. The east-facing slopes ideally benefit from the morning sun, which promotes even ripening. The soil, a combination of chalky clay and deep mineral layers, gives the Pinot Noir structure and intensity. The vineyard is known for wines with power, length, and remarkable finesse. The estate's old vines produce low yields and concentrated fruit that perfectly complements the Chambertin signature.
The style of the red wines of Domaine Jacques Prieur
The estate's red wines are known for their expressive fruit, refined tannins, and a long, energetic finish. The use of French oak supports the fruit without dominating it. The estate opts for an approach that prioritizes balance. The wines are never heavy, but retain tension and freshness, even in warmer years. Nadine Gublin often emphasizes the importance of natural acidity and controlled extraction. The wines age beautifully and gain complexity and depth with age.
The 2018 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru
The 2018 vintage had an early season with healthy grapes, with harvest commencing on August 29th. The Pinot Noir exhibited good sugar levels and retained tartaric acidity, which was crucial in the warm conditions. The grapes were completely destemmed, and the estate vinified with a simple, relaxed approach thanks to the remarkably healthy harvest. Malolactic fermentation concluded in the spring of 2019, after which the wine was further aged in barrel. Alcohol levels remained within an elegant range between 13.5 and 13.8 percent, and total acidity remained stable. This gives the 2018 Chambertin its structure and a beautiful balance between power and freshness.
Vinification, maturation and future development
The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru was fully destemmed and fermented in a way that respects the natural concentration of the fruit. The tannins are firm yet well-integrated, which suits the character of this vintage. The wine displays a clear structure that can further refine with age. The lively acidity and mineral tension give it longevity. According to tasters, the wine has an assertive character and plenty of energy, and it can open up further in the coming years. The drinking season likely extends well beyond 2040, and the wine already has the intensity typical of Chambertin, but it is precisely time that will bring more nuance.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with a vibrant heart. The nose opens with dark aromas of blackberry, briar, and subtle mineral notes. These notes are complemented by subtle nuances of smoke and spice. The nose is energetic and tightly defined. The palate reveals firm, persistent tannins that fully fill the mouth. The structure is full yet balanced thanks to the acidity that gives the wine freshness and length. The palate reveals dark berries, smoke, earth, and a delicate spiciness. The finish is long and offers room for further development. The wine has the character of a driven Chambertin with a powerful core that will reveal greater refinement in the coming years.

From: 2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)
The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed. It has a well-defined bouquet of intense blackberry, bilberry and light floral scents, plus touches of incense and pressed iris flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and quite firmly structured, so that it grips the mouth (though not as forcefully as the 2018 Chambertin). The spicy finish lingers in the mouth. Very fine.
- By Neal Martin on October 2019
"It was an early season," head winemaker Nadine Gublin told me, once I have navigated my way through the thick fog and omnipresent roadworks surrounding their winery in Meursault. "We did a green harvest for the Chardonnay - the first time - in order to control the yield. We began to pick on 29 August and finished on 12-13 September. We commenced with the Chardonnay and then the Pinot Noir. It was sunny, dry but the big surprise was that despite there being no rain, the vintage was generous for Chardonnay. Pinot Noir was approximately the same as in 2017 and perhaps the variety is more sensitive to conditions than Chardonnay. Vinification was simple due to the healthiness of the grapes, the good level of sugar and the good tartaric levels. This was very important. The hot weather burned the malic acid at the end of August so the tartaric was crucial. The malolactic was done by May/June 2019 after which the alcohol was between 13.5% and 13.8% and the levels of total acidity around 3.80gm/L, pH 3.40-3.50. We will begin the bottling the reds in February up until July 2020."

Based in Meursault since the 19th century, Domaine Jacques Prieur boasts one of the finest collections of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus in existence. Its 21 hectares of vineyards (11 ha of Pinot Noir and 10 ha of Chardonnay) include many prestigious terroirs, such as Grands Crus Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, Echézeaux, Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. That's a third of Burgundy's Grands Crus appellations.
Fourteen Premiers Crus complete this magnificent collection spread across Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Nine grands crus, fourteen premiers crus, three crus monopoles, a true pearl necklace.
Today, the Labruyère family is at the helm of this jewel of Burgundy, as well as owners of Château Rouget in Pomerol and Domaine Labruyère in Moulin-à-Vent. They work daily to make the most of this prestigious heritage. They are assisted by Martin Prieur, grandson of Jacques Prieur, who has lived and worked on the estate with his family since 1990. Now responsible, together with Edouard Labruyère, for the marketing of the Domaine's wines, Martin Prieur represents the link between past and present, because no one knows the history of the Domaine and its vineyards as well as he does. Under the leadership of Daniel Godefroy, an experienced vineyard manager who knows each plot inside out, the Domaine has been following a "viticulture raisonnée" approach for many years. The work in the winery and cellar is supervised by the excellent oenologist Nadine Gublin. An expert in thoughtful and precise interventions in the winemaking process, she was awarded the title of Winemaker of the Year by the Revue du Vin de France in 1998.
Domaine Jacques Prieur produces white and red wines that are powerful and flavorful, figureheads of the great modern Burgundy, and is made entirely of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus (with the exception of Clos de Mazeray in Meursault, Monopole and emblematic Village Appellation).
