Description
This Bouzeron comes from vineyards on the best slopes of the appellations. They planted the Aligoté doré grape for Bouzeron, which gives lower yields and more aromatic wines than its cousin, the Aligoté vert. This Bouzeron is true to its variety, a lively, fruity wine, but also has a finesse and roundness that come from the essential nature of the terroir. These qualities give it great versatility. To best appreciate its freshness and fruit, this Bouzeron should be drunk young, within two or three years. For the wine to develop fully full and "fat", it must be aged for up to ten years.
After the grapes are hand-picked and sorted, they go directly into a pneumatic press. The pressing is done slowly and gently to obtain clear, non-astringent juice. The must ferments in tanks or oak barrels at controlled temperatures to preserve the freshness and specific aromatic characteristics of each wine.
The Bouzeron vineyards, which are mostly located at the top of the hill, have suffered particularly from the frost. Production has been reduced by around 30%. This Bouzeron 2018 is more floral than fruity, but remains very fresh, thanks to the acidity present. This liveliness is, as always, generated by the specific marl-limestone soils of Bouzeron. Rich, round and lively at the same time, the mouthfeel. The wine alternates between the richness of the fruit, the roundness created by the good ripeness and the salty presence, a taste that makes the wine very special.

Aromas of green apple, pear, white flowers and beeswax introduce the 2018 Bouzeron, a medium-bodied, racy wine with an elegantly satiny attack, bright acids and a long, precise finish. This is a touch more demonstrative out of the gates than the 2017 rendition, but it retains plenty of cut in this warm year and should age well.
I met the thoughtful Pierre de Benoist a few days before France went into lockdown due to COVID-19, and it was a pleasure to taste these new releases from Domaine de Villaine. As ever, the wines deliver what followers of this address have come to expect: tensile, mineral wines that are refined and understated. This was also my first encounter with one of the domaine's new wines from Rully, where they have become major landholders and will soon be able to offer an enviably complete portfolio of the village's finest terroirs.
