Château Trotanoy, purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, has been considered one of Pomerol's premier crus since the eighteenth century. Trotanoy is considered one of Pomerol's finest châteaux. It is owned by Christian Moueix, who also owns renowned châteaux such as Hosanna, Latour à Pomerol, and Bélair Monange. In the small Pomerol appellation, Château Pétrus is perhaps the most famous, but many connoisseurs now know that Trotanoy is just as impressive. This opinion is shared by the American Robert Parker, who holds Trotanoy's recent vintages in extremely high regard.

Since 2009, a selection of gravel-based plots in the northeastern part of the estate has been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that is fruity and approachable after just a few years of aging, yet retains the depth, complexity, and incredible flavor concentration so characteristic of Trotanoy's unique terroir.

The Trotanoy vineyard, located in one of the most exposed parts of the plateau, slopes gently westward. The soil is a very dense mixture of clay and gravel that tends to harden after rain, drying out to an almost concrete-like consistency, hence the name "Trot-anoy"—"too tiring" to cultivate.

The soil at the highest point of exposure is largely gravelly, gradually becoming more dominated by clay as the altitude decreases. Beneath this clay lies a subsoil of red gravel and an impermeable layer of hard, iron-rich soil known as "crasse de fer." This fascinating soil diversity gives the wines power, depth, and complexity. The bouquet is typical of Trotanoy, with a beautiful minerality and great elegance, with subtle notes of pencil shavings and flint interwoven with the black and red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, excellent acidity, muscular fruit, and a solid line of firm, grainy tannins, finishing with length and fantastic tension. A very impressive wine that will last exceptionally well!
