Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, a blend of 49.2% Merlot, 8.9% Cabernet Franc and 41.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, needs a little coaxing to reveal notes of wild blueberries, redcurrant jelly, ripe plums and star anise with hints of red roses and vanilla pod plus a waft of Sichuan pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate has a serious structure of refreshing acidity and ripe, grainy tannins supporting the many delicate nuances, finishing with a lively lift.
At Château Haut-Brion and neighboring La Mission Haut-Brion, only about one hectare out of around 80 hectares of vineyards was damaged by frost in 2017. It seemed that in the areas where there was a little wind, there was no frost. Bud break was on March 13—not so early for this warm little pocket of vineyards close to the city—but the evolution of the vines was certainly faster than usual for the rest of the spring. It was a very dry, warm spring with even flowering. At the end of June, there was some rain to quench the parched vines, then July was a little cooler, according the Jean-Philippe Delmas. By mid-September, after the whites had already come in, the rains became an issue. The Merlot was almost all in before the rain, but the Cabernet Franc was affected and not much was used this year. Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested after the rains. Overall yields averaged-out at a very respectable 49.6 hectoliters per hectare. The final blends have been completed and are in barrel.
While the reds are incredibly impressive at both properties in 2017, I have to confess that I was completely blown-away by the caliber of the whites. WOW! Possessing at once electric intensity and yet bags of tightly-wound layers just waiting to be expressed over many years of cellaring, this is a truly spectacular vintage for the dry whites at both estates.

Vivid, with sleek cassis and crushed plum flavors stretching out nicely as this airs in the glass, carried by a racy, tarry edge and backed by ample sweet spice and tobacco notes. The 2017 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is aromatic, vibrant and fresh, but it has plenty of stuffing as well. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, tobacco and cedar add pretty savory notes. Pliant, lifted and vibrant in feel, La Chappelle is an absolutely stellar second wine.

Château la Mission Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Crus Classés in the 1953 Graves classification. La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister company of Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the wine region of Graves, in the municipality of Talence with an additional estate in Pessac. The winery also produces a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger of Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010.
The vineyards extend over 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan, with a distribution of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. The estate produces an average of between 6,000 and 7,000 cases of its grand vin La Mission Haut-Brion each year. For the second wine La Chapelle de la Mission, an average of 4,000 cases are produced. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases.
