Château la Mission Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Crus Classés in the Graves classification of 1953. La Mission Haut-Brion is the sister company of Château Haut-Brion. The winery belongs to the Graves wine region, in the municipality of Talence with an additional estate in Pessac. The winery also produces a second wine from younger vines, La Chapelle de la Mission, since the 1991 vintage, and the dry white wine Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc since the merger of Château Laville Haut-Brion in 2010. The vineyards stretch extends over 21 hectares between Pessac and Léognan. The white Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has an annual production of 500 to 700 cases.

The La Mission Haut-Brion 2018 Blanc is a blend of 57.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 42.6% Sémillon. It radiates from the glass with fresh notes of white peaches, fresh pears and pineapple with nuances of lime blossom, broken rocks and a breeze of saltiness and a hint of beeswax. The spicy, medium to full flavor is charged with energy and delivers vibrant citrus and tropical fruit layers with a satiny texture and fantastic length. Insanely beautiful.

The La Mission Haut-Brion 2018 Blanc is a blend of 57.4% Sauvignon Blanc and 42.6% Sémillon. It sashays out of the glass with gregarious notes of white peaches, fresh pears and pineapple with nuances of lime blossoms, crushed rocks and sea spray, plus a waft of beeswax. The racy, medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energy, delivering vibrant citrus and tropical fruit layers with a satiny texture and fantastic length. Completely exceeding my barrel tasting expectations, this promises to be an earlier drinking style, albeit multilayered, dripping with class and, yes, it's downright sexy. Give it just a few more months in bottle and then it should offer decadent drinking for the next 15+ years.
Domaine Clarence Dillon pretty much nailed it across the board in 2018, from the first growth(s) in Pessac to the Saint-Émilion wines; to the more humbly priced, larger volume offerings; and even the whites, which were also tricky considering the heat. All the wines are ripe and seductive, true to what 2018 wanted to give as a vintage, and yet they possess bags of bright fruit, energy and freshness. “The first key to success this vintage was to start the first mildew treatment in the vineyards a little bit earlier than usual,” Deputy Managing Director Jean-Philippe Delmas of Domaine Clarence Dillon informed me. “If you did that, you were protected. If you didn’t, you had to constantly run after the disease. The second challenge was the date of the harvest—the date was finally quite late. The best solution was to wait to get ripeness but to pick before there was heaviness or the wines got too fat.”
I asked Delmas which he loved more this year, Cabernet or Merlot? “I loved everything,” he promptly replied. “And on the Right Bank, the Cabernet Franc was wonderful this year, which isn’t always the case. I would say Right Bank and Left Bank are the same for quality.”

From: The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)
Tasted side by side, the 2018 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is unequivocally a few steps ahead of the 2018 Haut-Brion Blanc. I made sure to decant my bottle for three hours before penning a single note, as it always demands aeration. Slightly deeper in color, which is nothing unusual, it has a more complex bouquet of yellow fruit, peach skin, almond shavings, hazelnut and light lanolin notes, all beautifully defined. The palate is extremely well balanced with a tangy, marmalade-tinged entry, dried honey and a slight pepperiness toward the finish. Very cohesive and focused, this is a marvelous, quite cerebral La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc. Superb.

From: The Future’s Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Nov 2019)
The 2018 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, harvested from 27 August to 5 September and matured in 50% new oak. It is just the second time there has been more Sauvignon Blanc in the blend, the first time was in 2016. It has a touch more precision and penetration on the nose compared to the Haut-Brion Blanc, scents of Mirabelle, dried honey and a touch of crushed gravel. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity: attractive white peach and Nashi pear notes mixed with a hint of Panna Cotta towards the finish. Excellent.
