History of Château La Conseillante and its location in Pomerol

Château La Conseillante is located in the heart of Pomerol, one of the Bordeaux region's most prestigious appellations. The estate covers over 11 hectares and has been owned by the Nicolas family since 1871. Today, it is managed by Dr. Bertrand Nicolas and Jean-Valmy Nicolas, with Marielle Cazaux as winemaker. Its location on the border of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion creates unique terroir influences, with soils composed of 60% gray clay and 40% sandy gravel.

Why the 2024 La Conseillante is a collector's item

The 2024 vintage is a special edition, produced in extremely low yields of just 22 hectoliters per hectare. This wine was released in a limited edition of just 24,780 bottles. Thanks in part to the craftsmanship in a challenging vintage and the exceptionally refined style, this wine has already been hailed as one of the highlights of the vintage by renowned wine critics.

Composition and harvest of the 2024 Château La Conseillante

The blend consists of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 35 years. Harvesting took place manually between September 20 and October 4, 2024. The season was characterized by contrasts: a warm and wet winter, late flowering, and a hot, dry summer. Strict selection resulted in a low yield but highly concentrated, high-quality grapes.

Vinification and maturation in oak barrels

The grapes underwent a five-day cold pre-fermentation, followed by a total skin maceration of 28 to 30 days. Five percent of the production was fermented entirely in barrels for added depth. Maturation takes place in 70% new French oak barrels and 30% single-wine barrels for an estimated 16 months. This ensures a rich structure while retaining finesse.

Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour profile

The 2024 La Conseillante has a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose opens with aromas of violets, iris, black cherries, truffle, and a hint of pipe tobacco. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. Notes of dark chocolate, plum, orange peel, and graphite make it a complex wine with length and tension. The alcohol is at a moderate level of 13.5%, ensuring a fresh and balanced experience.

International ratings

The 2024 edition has received widespread praise from the international press: 95-97 points from The Wine Cellar Insider, 95-96 from James Suckling, 94-96 from Wine Advocate, and a remarkable 96-98 points from vvWine. Château La Conseillante

Located in Pomerol, Château La Conseillante has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The name "La Conseillante" refers to the influential merchant Catherine Conseillan, who bought and expanded the estate. In 1871, it became the property of the Nicolas family, who have managed the vineyard with care for generations since.

Vineyard and Terroir

The La Conseillante vineyard covers 12 hectares and is located on both the Pomerol plateau and in the Saint-Émilion appellation. The soil consists of a mix of clay and gravel, with sub-soils rich in iron oxide. This unique terroir is ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which combine to produce wines with a smooth, creamy texture and distinctive power.

Environment

Since 2016, La Conseillante has taken significant steps to reduce their environmental impact. The estate has achieved ISO 14001 and HVE 3 certifications, which means they have high standards in the areas of biodiversity, disease control, and fertilizer and water management. They use more than 80% organic and/or biocontrol products and apply biodynamic agriculture and phytotherapy.

Vinification and Wine Styles

The wines of La Conseillante are characterized by their finesse, balance and silky texture. The vinification takes place in 22 concrete barrels, each corresponding to a specific plot. The wines are aged in 70% new oak barrels, 27% second-year barrels and 3% in amphoras. This approach ensures optimal expression of the terroir and a refined taste.
