2018 Château Gruaud-Larose Grand Cru Classé
How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inChâteau Gruaud-Larose is a wine estate in Bordeaux and a second cru of the Bordeaux wine classification system of 1855. It is located in the village of Saint-Julien. For a long time it was one of the most important châteaus in the village, overshadowed only by the - originally undivided - Léoville. This cru, located behind Ch. Branaire Ducru and next to Ch. Lagrange, enjoys a beautiful terroir of stone deposits (from the Gironde, 700,000 years ago). It has belonged to the Merlaut family since 1997 and in recent years the wines have without exception received very high ratings and their Gruaud-Larose is above all a super feminine, refined and delicate, but beautifully concentrated St. Julien. The vineyards are (or are in the process of being converted) to organic wine cultivation.
The Gruaud Larose 2018 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and Petit verdot and Cabernet Franc, with a pH of 3.88 and 14.2% alcohol. In the glass it has a dark red color with a purple tinge. The wine is already expressive on the nose, so that promises something for the future. We smell aromas of ripe cherries, mulberries, plum preserves, black currant with hints of menthol, lilacs, licorice and cloves plus hints of fallen leaves and tilled soil. Medium to full bodied with a tight core of ripe, tightly packed, muscular fruit, a firm line of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, with a long and spicy finish. As Parker puts it in his review: "Very exotic Gruaud!"

The 2018 Gruaud Larose is blended of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, with a pH of 3.88 and 14.2% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with bold black cherries, mulberries, plum preserves and blackcurrant cordial scents with hints of menthol, lilacs, licorice and cloves plus wafts of fallen leaves and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied with a taut core of ripe, densely packed, muscular fruit, it has a firm line of ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Very exotic Gruaud!
Yields suffered slightly at Gruaud Larose in 2018. A part of the vineyard is now biodynamic. As they are only starting with biodynamics, the estate felt the vineyard wasn’t prepared for the mildew, so this is where they took the biggest hit. In the end they averaged 32 hectoliters per hectare.
