Description

The Canon-la-Gaffelière 2023 is a blend of 45% cabernet franc, 35% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon. The Canon la Gaffelière 2023 offers aromas of mint berries, plums, pencil shavings, dried herbs and bay leaves, followed by a medium to full, bright and crisp taste, supported by good acidity and chalky tannins. James Suckling writes May be better than 2022. This while the 2022 received the highest score of 100 points.
This cru, owned by Mr Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion since the new 2012 classification. The Classification of the Médoc from 1855 has (almost) never changed. This is different in Saint-Émilion (right bank).
Here the classification is adjusted every few years and Châteaus can be promoted or relegated! The last adjustment to the Saint-Émilion classification took place in 2012. During this revaluation, Château Canon La Gaffelière was promoted and this is of course completely justified, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns. The terroir is partly of very high quality (clay-limestone), but the flatter part at the foot of the slope with clay-sand has a very filtering and warm composition. Here he has planted Cabernet Franc which is doing remarkably well and which contributes to the power and aromatic complexity of the wine, in addition to the opulent and mouth-filling Merlot. The cabernets also contribute to the elegance and natural finesse of Ch. Canon La Gaffeliere. The wine has been organically certified from the 2015 vintage.

Score: 96-97
Showing al-dente fruit with raspberries, orange peel and other hints of bitter citrus. Medium-bodied with creamy and medium, round tannins leading to a salty finish. Cabernet franc really showing through. A blend of 45% cabernet franc, 35% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon. May be better than 2022.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Canon La Gaffelière is a powerful, dense wine. In recent years Canon La Gaffelière has been on the more perfumed side, but the 2023 moves in a direction of textural intensity. On the other hand, its balance is compelling. Dark red-toned fruit, pomegranate, spice, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open, but only with great reluctance. Tannins are present but also buried by the fruit.
