Description
These Sangiove grosso grapes come from the Caprili vineyard, which is located 335 meters above sea level and is planted with vines that have an average age of 15 years. These canes are planted close together (4,000 canes per hectare) and each cane produces an average of about 1.5 to 2 kg. grapes. The family uses only natural yeasts for alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel barrels; cultivated yeasts are not allowed here. During the soaking of the peels, a period of about 25 days, the temperature is closely monitored and corrected if necessary. At Caprili, the family believes that it should be between 28 and 30° Celsius. After fermentation, the Brunello-in-the-making is aged for three years in Slavonian oak barrels. These barrels have different capacities: 30, 40 and 60 hectoliters. Ultimately, the Brunello di Montalcino remains in the bottle for at least 4 months, depending on the outcome of the fermentation, before it is put on the market. This is a serious Brunello di Montalcino: meaty, concentrated and with a powerful structure. The grainy tannin is beautifully ripe and appears firm yet friendly. The excellent balance between fruit aromas (mainly cherries), acids and tannins makes this wine very harmonious. Caprili's Brunello di Montalcino has spicy aromas of toasted oak and roasted almond husk.

2018 Brunello di Montalcino
RP 94
The Bartolommei family at Caprili decided not to make its top-shelf Brunello di Montalcino Riserva AdAlberto in 2017. They deemed the hot vintage not worthy of long cellar aging.

The Caprili 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is lovely. The wine strikes that great balance of dark fruit, rose and tar that makes Brunello unique, and it doesn't have those rough edges or stemmy tannins that you see sometimes in this undeniably hot and dry vintage. This expression remains elegant but also generous, and that's not an easy intersection to reach. This is a standout wine from 2017, despite the challenges and the lower yields obtained this year. Production is 38,865 bottles.
The dry and hot 2017 vintage threw quite a few curveballs at vintners in Montalcino. The Bartolommei family of Caprili lost 15% of its annual production due to drought. But careful fruit selection led to what they hold to be better, more elegant fruit.

Tasting Note
A mix of iron, leather, tar and Mediterranean scrub marks this wiry red, which settles into a core of cherry and strawberry as the dense matrix of tannins emerges, asserting itself on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2042. 4,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. — BS
