Description
Pujanza belongs to the modern Rioja style and also has the great advantage that the vineyards are located at high altitudes (the Pujanza Norte comes from one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja). This gives the wine the typical Rioja character, but with a lot of elegance and freshness. The top model and flagship of Bodegas Pujanza. The wine comes from the Cisma vineyard which is located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria at an altitude of 600 meters. The vines are more than 100 years old (pre-phylloxera and ungrafted) and only 0.8 hectares in size. As you may know, after the grape blight in the early 1900s, almost all grape vines were destroyed and all new plantings were grafted onto American vines that were resistant. 99% of all vineyards are based on grapes grafted onto the American vine but there are still a number of authentic, very small vineyards that still have the unique original vines that have not been grafted and the Cisma is one of these rare versions.
The Cisma is already among the international top and has achieved cult status (especially since there are only a very limited number of bottles of this top wine). The wine was aged for 24 months in French oak barrels and then bottle-aged for more than a year. This is a very complex wine. In the glass the wine has a beautiful ruby red color. It has an intense nose with seductive aromas of red and black berries, with fine roasted notes, soft fresh herbs, leather, truffle, licorice and beautiful mineral notes (pencil point). Intense, powerful with an impressive attack with flavors of candied fruit. In the mouth the attack is very refined with silky tannins and beautifully refreshing acidity. Perfectly balanced with a very nice structure with a persistent and long finish. Clearly one of the largest Riojas in existence. Only 1070 bottles of this unique wine were made. All bottles are numbered.

2024 - 2030
The 2020 Cisma was produced with ripe Tempranillo grapes from a 0.8-hectare old vineyard at 60 meters above sea level in Laguardia. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in 500-liter French oak barrels for 30 months. It has 14.4% alcohol, a pH of 3.41 and six grams of acidity. It suffered in the comparison with other 2021s, as it comes through as riper and slightly more rustic; the quality of the 2020 tannins is not that of the 2021s, and the oak seems to have made more impact in the wine and comes through as faintly oaky. It's ripe, powerful, concentrated and generously oaked. 1,070 bottles produced.
Pujanza is a producer of clean and modern wines from Laguardia and is owned by Carlos San Pedro. Some labels have been redesigned and have a more classical feeling to them … And the wines perhaps do too. The 2021s are superb. He produces an average of 200,000 bottles.
Published: Feb 29, 2024
As for 2017, their vineyards didn't suffer any frost, so yields were high and they got a very healthy crop, very unusual for the region.

A quick introduction to Bodegas Pujanza: a relatively young Rioja estate that quickly made its mark with characterful wines.
History and background of Bodegas Pujanza
Carlos San Pedro, the fourth generation of a winemaking family in Laguardia, released his first wine under the Pujanza name in 1998. He started with 15 hectares of vineyards and has since grown to almost 40 hectares. All of it lies in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, at altitude, where cool nights shape the fruit. In just two decades the estate has become a key player in the region.
Location and terroir of Bodegas Pujanza
All vineyards are located within about 4 km of the winery, around the medieval town of Laguardia. The position in the Ebro valley, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria, creates a unique microclimate: warm days, cool nights, and limestone-rich soils. This brings slow ripening, aromatic depth, and a fresh line of acidity.
Grape varieties: Tempranillo and Viura
The estate works only with two native grapes: Tempranillo for the reds and Viura for the whites. Everything comes from their own vineyards, with close attention to each plot.
Specialities: single-vineyard wines and more
- Hado: entry-level Tempranillo from different parcels, bright fruit, aged 12 months in French oak.
- Finca Valdepoleo: the original 17.5 ha vineyard at about 630 m altitude, later lending its name to this cuvée.
- Norte: one of the highest plots (around 720 m), on limestone soils, powerful yet fresh with striking structure.
- La Paul: a newer addition, a small vineyard with its own microclimate at about 600 m, fermented spontaneously, partly in concrete and partly in oak. Elegant and balanced.
- Cisma: a rare bottling from a century-old parcel (La Valcabada), produced in tiny quantities, distinctive in style.
- Añadas FrÃas: white Viura from the San Juan plot (about 600 m), made only in cooler vintages such as 2007, 2010, and 2013.
Interesting facts about Bodegas Pujanza
- Carlos divides each vineyard - except for Cisma - into smaller subplots and vinifies them separately. They are only blended just before bottling to reach the desired balance.
- No cultured yeasts are used, and new oak is limited. Ageing takes place mainly in seasoned barrels for longer periods.
- Critics such as Parker and PeñÃn consistently award the wines over 90 points.
