Description
Corimbo from Bodegas La Horra is the latest wine adventure from Bodegas Roda, known for its fine Rioja wines. The winery here in the Ribera del Duero region is called Bodegas La Horra. The Corimbo comes from the golden mile in the Ribera del Duero valley. The project began in 2006, and the first vintage was vinified in 2008. Construction of the new bodega began in 2012. Corimbo is a botanical term. When the thistle flower blooms horizontally, it is called a Corimbo. A Corimbo is considered a relatively rare wine.
The Corimbo I is Bodegas La Horra's top-of-the-line model (in line with their Roda line, such as the Roda and Roda I). The wine is aged for 14 months in 80% French and 20% American oak, one-third of which is new oak. The Corimbo I is deep red in color. Youthful aromas of blueberry and density—it needs to be swirled in the glass to release all its aromas. A subtle spiciness emerges, but without any trace of barrel aging. Juicy on the palate, plenty of everything, a grand attack, and delicious. On the second sip, we notice more structure and depth, and the Ribera character unfolds more. Nevertheless, the Corimbo I possesses a certain Roda identity.

The 2018 Corimbo I is showing great and shows the freshness of the vintage. It has a mixture of red and black fruit, notes of flowers and wild herbs with spiciness from the aging in barrel, notes of cedar wood and pencil lead, quite classical and harmonious, with elegance. 31,256 bottles produced. It was bottled in August after spending 16 months in French and American oak barrels.
Bodegas La Horra is the winery in Ribera del Duero from Roda in Rioja, and they produce 150,000 bottles. I tasted two vintages of their wines, which is always great for the comparison. They are releasing their first certified-organic vintage in 2020.

A combination of complexity and vibrancy of fruit, but the depth is impressive, with lots of dark plums, smoked meat, cocoa powder, spiced black cherries, graphite, dark minerals and roasted spices. Full-bodied and structured but juicy, with more of a chalky texture. Long and bright. Drink from 2025.

The 2017 Corimbo I Reserva spent 16 months in 80% French and 20% American barrels. Garnet-red in the glass. The nose offers herbs and flor initially followed by dark fruit, hints of undergrowth and a developing bouquet. Dry and rich on the palate with a somewhat clingy flow, the tannins are a little feisty at the end. This is a characterful red.

Roda is one of Rioja's top projects and the catalyst for the major innovation movement in this well-known wine region with flying colors. The Rotllan-Daurella family from Barcelona started this project with great ambition in the most prestigious appellation in Spain. After 5 years of thorough research, they settled in Haro, the capital of Rioja Alta. In the Barrio de la Estación we also find all the great classics (Viña Tondonia, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Bodegas Bilbaínas) with a long tradition. Just here they decided to settle, with a view of the Sierra Cantabria and right next to the Ebro which flows slowly under the bodega. The domain was founded in 1987, but the first wine was only made in 1992. Perfection is striven for in every step. Top enologists Agustin Santolaya, Carlos Diez, Isidro Palacios and Esperanza Tomás form from the beginning the 'dream team' responsible for all steps in the production process. The ambition is to make the best wine possible from Tempranillo. Flagship is the Roda I, Roda's top wine that can be made depending on the vintage and in less or greater quantity. This wine always consists of 100% Tempranillo. The aim is to get to the essence of the Tempranillo with the Roda I and especially to work towards a wine with a lot of storage potential. In addition, the Roda, top quality and drinkable year after year with a nice storage potential, is almost always an assembly of Tempranillo with Garnacha and Graciano. These 2 wines are only made with grapes from vines older than 30 years. Finally, there is the Benjamin Sela, made from vines between 15 and 30 years old. Cirsión is an outsider: a wine from another planet, made from a selection of bunches of grapes where polymerization has already started in the grape itself.
