Description
The 2021 Bodegas Roda Roda I Blanco is a refined, gastronomic white wine from the Rioja region, made from the Viura, MalvasÃa de Rioja and Garnacha Blanca grape varieties. This blend comes from old vineyards on chalky soils that, together with the climate, provide a mineral and fresh character. The wine undergoes fermentation and 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, after which it matures in bottle for a further 18 months.
In smell and taste the wine offers a wide palette: aromas of citrus (like grapefruit), white fruit (quince and peach), and floral notes of elderflower come together with a subtle minerality and bitterness. The firm body and refreshing acidity give this wine not only a lively freshness, but also a considerable aging potential.
The Roda I Blanco is appreciated as a complex and long-lasting wine that goes particularly well with rich dishes, such as white meat and fish, and is ideally suited for autumnal meals

The second vintage of their white is the 2020 Roda I Blanco, which showed Rioja typicity and some developed aromas and pungent flavors, reflecting a year that is probably going to be approachable earlier on. It's a powerful and ripe white, with 14% alcohol and very good freshness denoted by the pH of 3.2. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large French oak barrels for 18 months. 8,242 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2022.
The super reliable Roda continues with their focus on R&D (they allocate 7% of their income to it!) and are producing their stable range with the addition of a white from 2019, now in its second year. They work 120 hectares of vineyard, 70 of them owned, mostly in Haro and around it, producing 400,000 bottles per year.

Creamy nose of brioche, lemon curd, macadamia nuts, minerals and a touch of butterscotch. Supple, round and full-bodied, with very fresh acidity and a long-lasting finish. Goes on for quite a while. A very consistent white from Roda. Mostly old-vine viuras with some malvasia and garnacha blanca. Drink or hold.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
The 2020 Blanco Roda I is a blend of Viura, MalvasÃa Riojana, and Garnacha Blanca, sourced from old vines in Rioja Alta. Exhibiting a golden hue, the 2020 presents aromas characterized by wood-influenced and vermouth-like notes, complemented by hints of cola and vanilla. On the palate, it is dry, chalky and notably concentrated, with a vibrant and oily texture that contrasts with a lingering, rich and savory finish. Overall, this well-crafted Rioja white offers an oaky profile and a crowd-pleasing mouthfeel.
